BEAUMONT, TX - Martin Masa's two goals led five Texas players who had two-point nights, as the Wildcatters defeated the Florence Pride 5-3 Friday night.
After the first half of the first period saw no scoring, Texas quickly took a 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of goals just 24 seconds apart.
The first goal came with Brian Reaney in the penalty box. Ashlee Langdone dumped the puck into the Pride zone, where Ryan Fultz chased it down in the far corner. Fultz centered a pass for a wide open Tony Lawrence right in front of Matt Underhill, and Lawrence one-timed it past the Pride goaltender for his 13th of the season at the 13:02 mark.
Texas quickly came right back up the ice and struck again at the 13:26 mark. Langdone set up shop in the far corner of the Pride zone and centered a pass for Rae Metz, who one-timed a shot into the net for his sixth tally of the season.
Just 28 seconds into the second period, the Pride pulled within one, taking advantage of a power-play opportunity. Wes Goldie gathered in a puck on the left-wing side, and skated to the circle where his quick shot beat goaltender Davis Parley for his 24th goal of the year.
But, Texas came back and scored two more goals before the end of the period. At the 13:48 mark, John Snowden and Brian Passmore skated into the Pride zone on a 2-on-1 rush. Snowden's shot was stopped by Underhill, but the rebound came to Passmore on the left wing side, and he slid a quick shot past the Pride netminder for his 13th of the season.
The Wildcatters made it 4-1 with just 43 seconds left in the middle period. On a goal-mouth scramble, Martin Masa corralled the puck and slit a shot past Underhill for his 13th of the season.
Texas took a four-goal lead at the 6:30 mark of the third period. With the Pride on the power play, the Wildcatters came back the other way. Masa crashed the net and was able to push the puck across the line for his second tally of the night.
Florence pulled to within three at the 11:37 mark. Jeff Szwez took a pass in the right wing circle and roofed a shot over Parley's left shoulder for his 15th of the season.
Just over two minutes later, the Pride made it a two-goal game. Mark McRae fed Matt Reid skating up the left-wing side shorthanded. Reid fired a quick wrist shot from the left-wing circle that beat Parley high to the glove side for his fourth tally of the season.
The Pride and Wildcatters meet again Saturday night at Ford Arena at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Palmetto Chiropractic Pre-Game Show starts at 7:40 on WDAR Sunny 105.5 FM.
