Lewandowsk, Gladiators Bite Grrrowl 5-4 in Shootout

Phil Lewandowski's fifth round shoot out goal propelled the Gladiators past the Greenville Grrowl 5-4 in a shootout in front of 6,763 on Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. The win was the Gladiators third consecutive as Gwinnett improves to 26-16-4 on the season.

Bryan LaChapelle took a centering pass from Troy Ilijow and beat Gladiators netminder Mike Buckley. Ilijow set up the play by taking advantage of a Gwinnett Defensive miscue to pick up and assist onthe goal at 4:13 of the first period.

Anthony Aqunio answerd a little over two minutes later. He slipped down the right wing and jamed the puck over the shoulder of Greenville netminder Michael Robinson at 6:09 of the period. Jim Jackson and Phil Lewandowski added the assists on the goal.

The Gladiators took a 2-1 on Anthony Aquino's second goal of the night. Phil Lewandowski and Brandon Dietrich fed Aquino to set up the goal at 9:27 of the opening stanza.

Matt Demarski tied the game up at 2-2 as he took a centering pass and ripped a shot past Buckley at 14:56 of the second period. Russell Spence and Stacey Bauman added the assits on the goal.

Greenville took a 3-2 lead on Demarski's second goal of the game. The forward ripped a one timer from Scott Kirton past Buckley at 18:46 of the second period. Randy Dagenais also had an assist on the goal.

Greenville pushed its lead to 4-2 on a shorthanded goal by Michael Chin. The forward deflected a Gladiators pass to spring himself for the shorthanded goal at 7:24 of the third period.

The got back into the contest on David Kaczowka's second goal of the season a little under a minute later. Chris Durno added an assit on the goal at 8:13 of the period.

Paul Flache tied the game up at four by flipping a loose puck in the slot over Robinson at 11:55 of the final period. Kevin Doell added an assist on the goal to push his consecutive point-scoring streak to 12 games. Blue Bennefield also added an assist on the goal for the Gladiators.

Mike Buckley won his second game of the season making 18 saves in the victory for the Gladiators. Gwinnett was six shots shy of an ECHL record for shots on goal in contest as they fired 64 in the game.
