Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Thirty-nine saves by Falcons' goaltender Jamie Holden and two power play markers by the visitors allowed the Falcons to avoid the sweep, as the Steelheads dropped a 2-1 decision to Fresno in front of a sellout crowd of 5,142 fans at Qwest Arena on Saturday night.
The Steelheads finish the season series at 6-3-0 against the Falcons in 2005-2006, while the loss snaps their six-game winning streak. Their club record, eight-game winning streak on home ice also ends, as they lose for the first time at home since February 11.
For the second straight game, Falcons' defenseman Dustin VanBallegooie scored a power play goal, as he opened the game's scoring midway through the first period. VanBallegooie's ninth of the year was the first, first period goal of the three-game series for the visitors. Derek Krestanovich and Peter Fregoe assisted on the goal at 9:42.
The Steelheads tied the match late in the first period on a Marty Flichel man advantage goal, his 26th of the season. David Bararuk laid a pass up just inside the offensive blue line, and Flichel rocketed a shot past Holden. Dan Hacker picked up an assist on the goal as well, as he's now recorded at least one point in six of the last seven games.
At the first intermission, the game was tied at one, with the Steelheads out-shooting the Falcons, 11-9.
There was no scoring in the second period.
VanBallegooie's second power play goal early in the third period at 3:06, turned out to be the game-winner. His shot from the left circles beat Steve Silverthorn (24 saves) five-hole for his 10th of the year. J.F. Plourde and Luke Curtin got the helpers.
Holden won for the 17th time this season, while Silverthorn drops to 20-14-3. The Falcons finished two-for-four on the power play, while the Steelheads went one-for-nine.
The final shots were 40-26 in favor of the home team, who had won the first two games of this series by a combined score of 9-2.
The Steelheads finish the regular season on a five-game road trip, beginning on Wednesday, March 29 against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Face-off is at 8:00 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. The Steelheads then return home on Saturday, March 18 to wrap up their three-game series versus the Thunder. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
