Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Stockton, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings raced into Stockton to continue their final California tour of the season. The thunderous applause from a crowd of 10,117 at the Stockton Arena helped rally the home team back, and hand the Salmon Kings their first loss in regulation in the last five games.

Rookie Elias Godoy scored his first professional goal to give the Salmon Kings the 1-0 lead with 2:41 left in the first frame. The 24-year-old out of the University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks (NCAA Div 1), deflected a Seth Leonard shot for the goal ahead goal.

On the ensuing faceoff, Godoy carried the puck into Thunder territory and passed to Forward Adam Taylor, who tallied his 16th goal of the season and gave the Salmon Kings a 2-0 lead in just ten seconds.

Just 59 seconds later, Stockton crept within one as Joel Irwin spotted Ned Havern with a breakaway pass. Havern beat Netminder Rob McVicar glove side for his 11th point as a member of the Thunder. Shots were in favour of Stockton 14-13 at the first intermission.

The Thunder came out roaring in the second period and scored three unanswered goals. Winger Mike Lalonde scored his 25th goal of the season, scooping up a rebound and snapping it past McVicar, 17 seconds into the second. Nathan Martz scored the 3-2 leading goal just 29 seconds after the tying goal. Martz whacked away at a rebound to slip the puck past McVicar for his 16th goal this season.

At 6:23 into the second, Martz and Lalonde assisted on the fourth Stockton goal. Forward Aaron Foster was left open at the circle and gave the Thunder the 4-2 lead. Stockton tallied 27 shots alone in the middle frame.

Stockton Goaltender Jake Moreland hung on in the scoreless third period, despite odd man rushes by the Salmon Kings.

Victoria was 0-4 on the power play and Stockton was held off the scoreboard in their six attempts with the extra man. Despite making over 40 saves, McVicar was handed his 12th loss of the season, and Moreland posted his 11th win. Stockton out shot Victoria 53-36.

An electrifying second round begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Stockton Arena Saturday night. The Salmon Kings will play game five of their road trip in Fresno on Monday, March 27, and return home briefly before heading to Alaska for a two game series starting March 31.
