Third Period Flurry Gives Gulls 4-2 Win

March 25, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls played their own version of the two-minute drill Friday night against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. San Diego notched three goals in that span early in the third period to break a tie and cruise to a 4-2 win, before 5,870 at the ipayOne Center.

The Gulls (30-27-6) have now won a season-high four straight games at home and move within seven points of the third-place Bakersfield Condors with just nine games left in the regular season. Meanwhile, Long Beach (33-23-9) stays in second place, two points ahead of Bakersfield.

It was a 1-1 game entering the final frame, but Alex Kim, R.J. Enga and Nikita Korovkin took turns beating Long Beach goaltender Olivier Michaud.

Kim, who missed the last 31 games with a broken collar bone, got things going at the 6:06 mark when he redirected in Steve Hildenbrand's centering pass for his second goal of the game - 14th of the season. Enga then tucked in an unassisted tally at 7:54 after stealing the puck in the neutral zone. Not to be out-done was Korovkin, whose slapper from the point bounced off an Ice Dog defenseman and past Michaud at 8:06.

Michael Lambert made it a 4-2 game at 18:07 of the final stanza with a power-play goal, his eighth overall. But that's as close as the Ice Dogs could get, as Gulls netminder Michael Mole (30 saves) and company held on for the two-goal victory.

Long Beach jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as Sean McAslan notched his team-leading 24th goal 61 seconds into the game. Justin Aikins grabbed the puck out of the right wing corner and centered a pass to McAslan, who redirected it past Mole.

The Ice Dogs out-shot San Diego 14-5 in the opening period, but Mole kept it a 1-0 game. The Gulls came back to out-shoot Long Beach 9-5 in the middle frame and tied it just 23 seconds in, thanks to Kim's first tally of the game.

After his initial shot was stopped, Kim drove to the net and deflected Hildenbrand's centering feed across the goal line - barely. It also extended his point streak to 13 games, dating back to before his injury occurred.

Notes: San Diego is now unbeaten in 11 of its last 15 games (10-4-1)... Kim, who finished with three points Friday, has 30 (14g, 16a) in 19 games this season... San Diego has allowed only four power-play goals in the last nine games, but is only 2-for-34 on the power play in its last eight games... Enga signed Friday and is expected to be in the lineup for the remaining two games this weekend... The Gulls are 4-4-0 against Long Beach this season...

San Diego is back home Saturday against the Phoenix Roadrunners, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. It will be "80s Night," and the first 8,000 fans will receive a Velcro wallet, courtesy of Casino Pauma.
