Colorado Eagles News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads defeated the Colorado Eagles, 4-2, in the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams this week. Idaho's Josh Robinson stopped 39 shots -- including all 17 he faced in the third period -- in the win, which moved him into a second place tie with 22 on the season, most among rookies.
The teams traded goals in the first period, with Idaho taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. William Lacasse started the scoring eight minutes in on a shot from the point. Colorado countered with their league-leading power play at 11:17 when Kyle Ostrow put the puck home from down low. But the Steelheads used their second-ranked power play to answer a minute and a half later -- just seven seconds into their man advantage -- when Austin Smith scored from the left wing.
The teams continued to trade goals in the second stanza, with the red-hot Michael Forney tying the game at 2 just 24 seconds into the period. The goal was Forney's 7th in the past eight games, and represented his 30th of the season, third-most in the ECHL. But the Steelheads' power play struck again 13 minutes in when Justin Taylor's shot from the left point deflected off of Patrick Cullity in the low slot and skidded past Adam Brown to make it 3-2.
The Eagles put forth a great effort to tie the game in the final frame, out-shooting the Steelheads, 17-6, but they couldn't get another puck past Robinson, whose best save came 5:30 in when he stopped Ray Kaunisto on a rush with his left toe. After the teams traded unsuccessful power plays, and with time winding down, Tyler Gron scored into an empty net to finish the scoring.
