Harrisburg Senators News Release
Harrisburg, PA - Harrisburg Senators manager John Stearns was selected to coach the World Team in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium, July 13th as part of Major League Baseball's All-Star Weekend. The Harrisburg skipper will coach a World Team which features some of the best prospects in the minor leagues, including former Senators RHP Shairon Martis.
"It's exciting to get to work with the prospects in the game," Stearns said. "I'm honored to coach this game. On All-Star Weekend, you want to win the game and guys play hard, but it's a fun time."
Stearns will coach under World Team manager and two-time All-Star Tino Martinez. Stearns himself was a four-time National League All-Star catcher for the New York Mets.
"It will be nice to get back to New York City. I was there for ten seasons," Stearns said. "It should be a good two days."
Martis, 21, began the season on Harrisburg's Opening Day roster but was promoted to Triple-A Columbus earlier this month. He is from the Caribbean island of Curacao, part of the Netherlands Antilles. Martis went 4-4 with a 3.98 ERA in 14 starts for the Senators.
Senators players were selected to play in the Futures Game in both 2006 and 2007. RHP Collin Balester played for Team USA last season at AT&T Park in San Francisco and C Salomon Manriquez played for Team World in 2006 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
The Futures Game features the best prospects from all levels of the minor leagues. Stearns and Team World will take on Team USA at Yankee Stadium on July 13th. Rosters are selected by Major League Baseball, in conjunction with all 30 Major League teams and Baseball America.
Current major leaguers from last year's Futures Game include Reds OF Jay Bruce, Rays 3B Evan Longoria, Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain, Cubs C Geovany Soto and Reds 1B Joey Votto.
The Senators return to Commerce Bank Park on Monday, June 30th for a key four-game homestand against the Bowie Baysox (Double-A Baltimore Orioles). All four games begin at 6:35 PM.
