Trenton Thunder News Release

(Portland, NJ)- Portland RHP Kyle Jackson shut down the Thunder offense, as he went five innings pitched of scoreless baseball, giving up only three hits and one walk, while striking out three. It took until the top of the seventh inning, when Edwar Gonzalez scored on an RBI ground out by Colin Curtis, for the Thunder to score their first run as they dropped game one of a three game set 5-3 to the SeaDogs.

The SeaDogs on the other hand got on the board early and often with the long ball. DH Sandy Madera hit an opposite field solo shot to right field off of RHP Eric Wordekemper to lead off the second inning and make it 1-0 at the time. Wordekemper would give up another solo homerun in the fourth inning, this time to 1B Aaron Bates. RHP pitcher Mark Melancon would come in to relive Wordekemper, but the first batter Melancon faced, C Mark Wagner, went yard as well as the SeaDogs went back-to-back to make it a 3-0.

The Thunder would fight back to make it 3-1 in the top of the seventh, but two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning by Portland sealed the fate of the game. One high point in the game was Edwar Gonzalez's performance. Gonzalez went two-for-four and was responsible for all three Thunder runs, scoring one in the seventh inning, and knocking in the other two in the eighth inning. RHP Jason Jones will be on the mound for game two of the series, which is a 6:00 start time on Saturday.
