Aerodynamics...

It's Not How You Start...Bowie starter David Hernandez dominated the Aeros for six innings, taking a no-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the seventh, but Akron was finally able to overcome the hard-throwing right-hander and earn a 3-2 victory in the series finale yesterday afternoon. RF Bronson Sardinha broke up the no-no with a leadoff single in the seventh, lifting a soft liner just over the head of second baseman Carlos Rojas. Sardinha then moved all the way around to third after Hernandez threw wildly to first on a pick-off attempt, and 3B Wes Hodges brought him home on sacrifice fly down the right-field line to make it 2-1. 1B Stephen Head followed by rocking a 1-0 change-up into the bleachers in right, tying the game at 2-2 and sending Hernandez to the showers. The Aeros played small-ball to take the lead in the eighth inning. Speedy CF Jose Constanza led off with a bunt that came to rest on the third-base line for a single, RF Trevor Crowe bunted him to second, and walks to SS Josh Rodriguez and Sardinha loaded the bases with one out. Hodges then delivered the difference-maker with his second sac fly of the day, good for both his league-leading 61st RBI of the season and the winning margin.

Bold Debut...Less than two hours after arriving in the Aeros dugout and shaking hands with his new teammates, reliever Luis Perdomo was on the hill making his Double-A debut. The Dominican Republic native was unfazed, notching scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth while allowing just a single, striking out two, and giving the offense a chance to get back in the game. When the Aeros did just that, Perdomo was rewarded for his effort by picking up the win. The right-hander was an All-Star before his call-up from Kinston, going 3-1 with a league-leading 18 saves in 23 chances while also notching 43 strikeouts in just 39.0 innings and picking up the save in the Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game.

Bullpen Excellence...Over the last 12 games (dating to June 17th), the Aeros bullpen has been outstanding with a 2.10 ERA in 34.1 innings of work. The relievers have struck out 33 batters over that span and walked just 10 and are 3-1 with three saves and two holds. Overall during the 12-game stretch, the bullpen ERA has dropped from 4.33 to 4.04. Yesterday Perdomo and closer Randy Newsom combined for three innings of one-hit baseball.

Head of the Class...Aeros 1B/OF Stephen Head has been a model for consistency this season, keeping his average around the .300 mark for much of the year. Yesterday, he slugged his fourth home run of the season and is now hitting .419 (13-31) in his last eight games with a pair of homers, six RBI, and four doubles. Head has not gone three straight games without a hit this season and has been held hitless in consecutive contests just three times. He is third on the team with a .305 batting average and has four homers and 21 RBI on the year after missing 15 games in April and May with a right wrist injury.
