June 27, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Portland, ME) - Kyle Jackson (4-1) worked five scoreless innings and Sandy Madera drove in three, lifting the Portland Sea Dogs (44-33) past the Trenton Thunder (47-32), 5-3, Friday night at Hadlock Field in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368. The ‘Dogs now trail the first place Thunder by two games in the Northern Division (one in the loss column).

Jackson earned his first win as a starter, retiring 13 of the first 14 batters faced (2-out triple by Austin Jackson in the first) and allowed only three hits, one walk and fanned three over five frames.

Beau Vaughan pitched a perfect ninth to record his 9th save of the season and his second in as many nights. Vaughan has not allowed an earned run in 12 straight outings (17 IP, 10 H and 21 SO) and is tied with T.J. Large for the most saves among Red Sox Minor League pitchers.

The Sea Dogs had the power sticks in the series opener against Trenton. Madera led off the 2nd inning with a solo-homer over the right-field wall. The home run for Madera was his second in three days and his 6th from the clean-up spot this season. The Portland designated hitter cracked a two-run double down the left-field in the seventh inning, scoring Bubba Bell and Jeff Corsaletti, giving the Sea Dogs a 5-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Aaron Bates and Mark Wagner smacked back-to-back home runs against different pitchers. Bates chased starter Eric Wordekemper (2-2) out of the game with a big-fly (5th) off the Dunkin Donuts' Message Center. Wagner's home run came off reliever Mark Melancon (3.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) and clocked the Coke bottle above the Maine Monster. Wordekemper made his first start of the season for Trenton and took the loss, allowing four hits and two runs over 3.1 IP.

Trenton scored their first run of the series in the seventh inning off Daniel Haigwood. Edwar Gonzalez and Reegie Corona began the frames with singles and moved up on a sacrifice-bunt by Ramiro Pena. The Thunder added two runs off Mike James in the eighth inning with two outs. Jose Tabata and Chris Malec began the rally with singles; Edwar Gonzalez lined a 2-run double to right-center field. On the hit by Gonzalez, Daeges slipped on the slick outfield grass, aiding Gonzalez's 2-base hit. Friday's game was delayed 31 minutes due to wet field conditions.

3B Jorge Jimenez made his Double-A debut for Portland and went 1-for-3 with a double. Jimenez was assigned to Portland earlier in the day when INF Andrew Pinckney was released by the Boston Red Sox.

Portland and Trenton play game two of their series on Saturday night at Hadlock Field - game time is 6:00 PM. RHP Matt Goodson (4-4, 5.34) will make his 14th start of the season for Portland and RHP Jason Jones (8-3, 2.45) goes to the mound for Trenton.

Notes...Bubba Bell had two hits and leads the team in average at .307...Portland can win their first series at home this month with a victory on Saturday...Mark Wagner snapped an 0-for-20 slump with a homer in the fourth inning - his last three hits are all home runs at Hadlock Field.
