-SPIKES CONTINUE SERIES VS. YANKEES TONIGHT: The State College Spikes, leaders of the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division and winners of 10 of their last 11 games, take on the Staten Island Yankees tonight in the second game of a three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Yankees currently sit in third place in the New York-Penn League McNamara Division. The Spikes are first in the Pinckney Division by 4 1/2 games over Batavia. State College is 11-14 all-time against Staten Island, including a 7-6 mark at home against the Yankees. Staten Island has not visited Medlar Field at Lubrano Park since 2012.
-LAST NIGHT: Will Anderson produced another strong start on the mound, and Rowan Wick increased his New York-Penn League-leading RBI total to 32 over the first 29 games of the year as the State College Spikes topped the Staten Island Yankees, 6-3, on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for their 10th victory in the last 11 games.
Anderson won his third straight start after allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander from Cal State-Monterey Bay struck out three batters on the night as well. Anderson's walk, which was given to Staten Island leadoff batter Collin Slaybaugh in the first inning, was his first in 15 innings of work since June 24.
Wick doubled home the first of two State College runs in the fifth inning, and went 2-for-4 to bring his average to .389 on the year. The North Vancouver, BC native still leads the NYPL with 12 homers as well.
Anderson Gerdel allowed two hits and struck out one during a scoreless ninth inning to grab his first save.
-PEREZ TO GO TO MOUND FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Dewin Perez makes his team-leading sixth start of the year for the Spikes tonight. Perez went a season-long 6 1/3 innings last time out on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five in a win over Auburn. The Cartagena, Colombia native has made two starts at home, though none since June 25. Perez has a road ERA of 3.31 and a home ERA of 7.11. The southpaw also maintained his streak of 393 batters faced without allowing a home run that stretches back to his first outing in the Dominican Summer League in 2012. On the year, Perez has struck out 17 and walked eight while allowing 22 hits in 22 2/3 innings.
-CARLEY STARTS FOR YANKEES TONIGHT: Right-hander Sean Carley, the New York Yankees' 14th-round draft choice out of West Virginia this year, makes his second appearance for Staten Island tonight, and his first in a starting role. Carley gave up two runs on two hits and two walks over two innings against Aberdeen on Monday night in his first appearance in the NYPL. The Morgantown, WV native started his pro career with two outings for the GCL Yankees 1 in June, allowing one run over three innings. Carley was both a starter and a closer at WVU this past spring, going 5-3 with a 2.95 ERA and four saves in 18 appearances.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick grabbed more laurels to begin the 2014 season as he earned the St. Louis Cardinals Player of the Month award last Wednesday and set the Spikes' single-season home run record with his 11th homer later that night. Wick has continued his torrid start to the year, notching his 12th homer of the year on Tuesday. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he is leading the league with 32 RBI and his .389 average is just one point back of Tri-City's Bobby Boyd for the league lead.
-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes stopped the Yankees' three-game winning streak last night...State College's 2.69 team ERA is now the best in the New York-Penn League after Hudson Valley yielded 10 runs to Batavia last night...Hudson Valley scored 12 runs last night, though, and now leads the NYPL with 159 runs scored to the Spikes' 157...Brian O'Keefe has been hit by seven pitches this season, and is in the NYPL lead in that category...Wick leads the NYPL with a .496 on-base percentage and .832 slugging percentage...Jacob Booden is tied with Staten Island's Andury Acevedo for the most pitching appearances in the NYPL this year with 11...Kyle Grana has the third most strikeouts per nine innings among NYPL relievers (13.5)
