Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- The Aberdeen IronBirds fell to the Auburn Doubledays 5-3, ending their season-high six game winning streak.

Steve Johnson got off to a rough start in the first inning when he gave up three hits with one of those hits being a homerun that gave the Doubledays an early 2-0 lead.

The IronBirds would threaten in the bottom of the first when Oswill Lartiguez would hit a leadoff double and then advance to third on a Steve Wilkerson groundout to first base. Lartiguez however did not end up scoring as the following two Aberdeen batters flew out to end the inning.

Johnson's night would end after three innings of work. He gave up three hits, two runs, which were both earned, and rung up two strikeouts. Augey Bill took the mound in the fourth inning to relieve Johnson.

The Doubledays would get on the scoreboard again in the top of the fifth. Osvaldo Abreu would get the inning started for the Doubledays by hitting a leadoff single. After the next two Doubleday batters flew out, Willie Medina hit a single to advance Abreu to third. Jose Marmolejos followed Medina's single with a double of his own to bring home Abreu. John Wooten would then end the inning when he flew out to left field with Medina stranded on third.

Aberdeen would respond in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run of their own. Austin Pfeiffer hit a leadoff single. After a Tad Gold fly out, Lartiguez hit a single that advanced Pfeiffer to second. Wilkerson was the key cog in the inning as he hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right field that allowed Pfeiffer to advance to third and eventually home as the throw home from Medina at second base was wide of catcher Raudy Read's glove.

Auburn then tacked on an additional two runs in the top of the top of the sixth. Read hit a leadoff single followed by a walk from Matthew Page to put two men on base. Abreu reached base on a fielder's choice that tagged out Page at second while Read sprinted home to score. Abreu would race home himself when Cody Gunter hit a fly ball deep in the outfield near the centerfield wall. The hit appeared to be an inside the park homerun when Gunter was barreling his way towards home until he was tagged out a few steps before the home plate on a throw from Wilkerson.

The only magic that the IronBirds were able to muster up in the bottom of the sixth was a homerun from Riley Palmer to bring the deficit within three runs at 5-2. Aberdeen did threaten to score in the bottom of the seventh as Pfeiffer, Lartiguez, and Wilkerson loaded the bases to start off the inning. However the IronBirds walked away empty handed yet again as Anderson hit into an inning ending double play

Aberdeen added another run in the bottom of the eighth to pull within two runs of the Doubledays, and make the score 5-3. With two outs, Palmer worked a walk and Jamill Moquete hit a triple to the wall in left center, bringing Palmer home. Pfeiffer struck out with Moquete on third to bring the inning to a close.

Aberdeen rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Lartiguez and Wilkerson hit singles to put them both on the corners. However the comeback fell short as Anderson cracked a line drive to pitcher Tyler Mapes, who caught it and then doubled Wilkerson off of first base.

The loss dropped the IronBirds' record to 10-20 and put an end to their six game winning streak. Doubledays pitcher Matt Drosier earned the win improving to 1-2, while Johnson took the loss falling to 0-1. Mapes earned his second save of the season.

Aberdeen and Auburn will conclude their three game set tomorrow at Ripken Stadium with first pitch being scheduled for 7:05 pm. The IronBirds will send Stephen Tarpley (0-1, 7.36) to the mound while Drew Van Orden (0-2, 15.19) will start for the Doubledays.
