Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Revenge of the Sixth; IronBirds Win 6th Straight Courtesy of Big 6th Inning

Thanks of a five-run sixth inning, the IronBirds beat the Doubledays, 6-1, on Star Wars night last night, increasing their winning streak to six game. Austin Anderson pounded out three hits in four at-bats last night and Steve Wilkerson crushed a home run to deep right field last night, his first career round tripper. Nigel Nootbaar got the win for Aberdeen, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing only one hit. It was the first professional win of his career. Chase McDowell took the loss.

We're Going Streaking!

With the win last night, the IronBirds increased their current winning streak to six games. Last year's team's longest winning streak topped off at five games. If Aberdeen were to win tonight, they would tie their longest winning streak in franchise history, set back in July 1-7, 2006. The IronBirds also set the record for longest losing streak in franchise history this year, losing 11 games from June 19-29.

What a Relief

After starting pitcher John Means left the game after pitching three innings, the bullpen came in the game to shut down the Doubledays offense. Matt Trowbridge pitched 1.1 innings, allowed four hits and one earned run. Nigel Nootbaar, the winning pitcher, pitched 2.2 innings, allowed one hit, one run, and struck out one batter. Derrick Bleeker pitched the final two innings, allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out one.

On the Mound Tonight...

The IronBirds will send RHP Steve Johnson to the mound tonight in his second rehab appearance at Ripken Stadium. In his first outing on July 9 versus the Batavia Muckdogs, Johnson went two innings, allowed one hit, no runs, and walked one. The Doubledays will send RHP Matt Derosier to the mound against Aberdeen. He made his last start on July 7 versus the State College Spikes, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits, and three earned runs, including a home run. That was Derosier's only start on the season, as he has made four appearances out of the bullpen, pitching to a 8.49 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched.
