The Spinners head to Fenway Park for the ninth annual "Futures at Fenway." Kevin McAvoy is on the mound for the 3:30 first pitch.
S P I N - N O T E S:
Streak Moves to Five: The Spinners entered Saturday having lost 7-of-8, while the Mahoning Valley Scrappers entered in the midst of an eight game losing streak...It was the Scrappers who put an end to their losing streak with a 9-3 win Saturday night, scoring three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to snap their skid and extend the Spinners misery...The loss with the Spinners fifth straight and eighth in their last nine.
Victorino Gets Day : Rather than join Double-A Portland, OF Shane Victorino received a day off Saturday and will rejoin the Spinners today at Futures at Fenway...In his most recent two-games with the Spinners, Victorino is 0-for-4 with a walk, playing seven innings in right-field most recently Friday night.
Futures History : Today represents the Spinners sixth trip to Fenway Park as they participate in the ninth annual Futures at Fenway...After winning in 2006, 2007 and 2008, including a walk-off hit from 3B Will Middlebrooks in 2008, the Spinners have lost in their last two appearances, including a rain shortened 2010 game and most recently in 2012, a game in which LHP Brian Johnson was struck with a batted ball on the first batter of the game...Following the game fans can enjoy the classic movie, Field of Dreams on the video board.
McAvoy Gets Call: RHP Kevin McAvoy, a fourth round selection out of Bryant University in this June ' s First-Year Player Draft, gets the start for the Spinners today...McAvoy made his professional debut July 8 at Vermont, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out one.
Mercedes to Follow: On Minor League Rehab Assignment from Hi-A Salem, RHP Simon Mercedes is slated to follow McAvoy to the mound today...Mercedes has made two appearances for the Spinners, most recently July 8 at Vermont, pitching six total innings, striking out a pair while allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks...With Salem, Mercedes was 2-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 11 outings, striking out 43 in 44.1 innings pitched.
Longhi Keeps Going: OF Nick Longhi continued his assault on New York-Penn League pitching Saturday evening, going 1-for-3 with a walk...With the hit, Longhi extended his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest since OF Luis Sumoza had a 16 game hitting streak in 2008...Longhi leads the Spinners in most statistical categories, ranking amongst the league leaders in batting average (5th, .352) and doubled (T-4th, 9).
The Other Betts : 3B Jordan Betts shows there isn ' t just one Betts in the Red Sox system as the 18th round selection from Duke has been one of the Spinners most consistent hitters to start the season...Betts, who is no relation to Mookie, has hit in 12-of-14 games (19-for-55), with seven multi-hit game during that stretch, raising his batting average from .229 to .300...Betts leads the Spinners with five home runs, ranking fourth in the NYPL.
Travis Finds Groove : A second-round draft pick from Indiana, 1B Sam Travis got off to a slow start for the Spinners, going just 2-for-17 to start his career...Since then, Travis has found a groove, batting .314 (22-for-70) with seven multi-hit games, raising his average from .118 to .276.
Mars on Earth : OF Danny Mars, a fifth round pick from Chipola College, has hit well atop the Spinners line-up with hits in 10 of 12 games to start his career, including a 2-for-3 game Saturday night.
