-SPIKES FINISH FIRST HALF OF HOMESTAND TONIGHT: The State College Spikes, leaders of the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division, come back to Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park tonight to continue a six-game homestand with the last game of a three-game set against the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Cyclones, who currently sit in second place in the New York-Penn League McNamara Division, are the first out-of-division opponents for the Spikes, who are first in the Pinckney Division by 2 1/2 games over Batavia. State College is 7-19 all-time against Brooklyn, including a 3-11 mark at home against the Cyclones. Brooklyn has not visited Medlar Field at Lubrano Park since 2012.
-LAST NIGHT: Cody Schumacher pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings and allowed just one hit for his first professional win as the Spikes topped the Brooklyn Cyclones, 4-1, on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Schumacher, the St. Louis Cardinals' 36th-round draft choice this year out of Missouri State, faced the minimum 15 batters through the first five innings, then yielded two walks before leaving the mound. Tomas Nido's third-inning single was the only Brooklyn hit against Schumacher, but the righty forced a double play one batter later to end the inning. The St. Louis, MO native also struck out seven over his time on the mound as the Spikes recorded 12 strikeouts as a staff on the night.
State College bolstered Schumacher's efforts with timely offense. Nick Thompson doubled in the second inning, and scored the game's first run on Jake Stone's RBI single. In the fifth, the Spikes scored three times, with Robelys Reyes's triple starting the surge. Reyes crossed the plate on Danny Diekroeger's sacrifice fly to center, then Alex De Leon's single led to Rowan Wick's RBI double.
-GOMBER GETS BALL FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Left-hander Austin Gomber makes his fourth start as a professional for State College tonight. Gomber made his longest outing for the Spikes last time out, going four shutout innings against Jamestown despite allowing four hits and four walks. The southpaw recorded three strikeouts in the outing. Gomber, who was drafted by the Cardinals' out of Florida Atlantic in this year's fourth round, has allowed just one earned run over eight innings this year, and has escaped bases-loaded situations without allowing a run on three different occasions this season.
-VALDEZ TO MAKE START FOR CYCLONES: Left-hander Carlos Valdez makes his fifth start of the year for Brooklyn tonight. Valdez has faced just two teams so far in Staten Island and Aberdeen, and rebounded from yielding five runs in two-thirds of an inning against Staten Island on June 28 to toss five shutout frames against Aberdeen on Sunday. The native Dominican has 12 strikeouts and 10 walks over 14 2/3 innings. Valdez fractured his rib in a play at the plate against State College at MCU Park on August 11 of last year, and missed the rest of the 2013 season because of it. The southpaw had gone 2-2 with a 2.58 ERA in nine starts prior to that.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick grabbed more laurels to begin the 2014 season as he earned the St. Louis Cardinals Player of the Month award last Wednesday and set the Spikes' single-season home run record with his 11th homer later that night. Wick has continued his torrid start to the year, notching his 12th homer of the year on Tuesday. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he added to his league-leading total with his 31st RBI of the year last night, and his .386 average is second-best in the league by just two points.
-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes' 2.71 team ERA is second in the league behind Hudson Valley (2.51)...The Spikes have scored 147 runs on the season, the most in the NYPL...Jacob Booden's .120 opponents' batting average is fourth among NYPL relievers...Brian O'Keefe has been hit by six pitches this season, and is in the NYPL lead in that category...Catcher Adam Ehrlich was promoted to Advanced-A Palm Beach yesterday after starting his 2014 season there...Wick leads the NYPL with a .495 on-base percentage and .852 slugging percentage
