Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- Ryan Huck hit a three-run homer and Max Kuhn a two-run homer to cap off a seven-run second inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters scored 13 times over the first four innings and went on to beat the Williamsport Crosscutters 14-2 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Bowman Field.

The Lake Monsters took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Ben McQuown two-out RBI single and then scored seven times in the second inning, the most runs for Vermont in an inning since scoring eight runs in the first inning vs. Tri-City on September 3, 2011 and the most runs scored on the road in an inning since seven at Jamestown on August 14, 2010.

Six of seven runs in the second were unearned due to an error by centerfielder Aaron Brown on an Andy Paz one-out flyball that scored Jose Brizuela for a 2-0 lead. The error was costly as Joe Bennie collected a two-out RBI single before Huck smashed a three-run homer to left field off starter Chris Oliver and Kuhn followed a walk to McQuown with a two-run homer to left off reliever Preston Packrall.

After the Crosscutters scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second, Vermont got the runs back on RBI singles from Brett Vertigan and Bennie in the third for a 10-2 advantage. The Lake Monsters scored three more times in the fourth, including a Vertigan RBI infield single for Vermont's 12th and final hit of the game with one out in the fourth. Vertigan ended the night 3-for-5 with singles in the second, third and fourth innings along with a walk in his next at bat in the sixth.

Vermont got its final run in the sixth on a hit by pitch, two walks and a bases loaded hit by pitch of Gabriel Santana. The 14 runs were the most for the Lake Monsters in a game since a 14-4 win over Hudson Valley on August 20, 2011 and the most runs for Vermont on the road since a 15-9 win at Tri-City on September 8, 2005.

Starter A.J. Burke (2-1) allowed two unearned runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts over five innings for the win, while reliever Corey Miller retired nine straight batters after a leadoff walk in the sixth in his three scoreless innings of work. Along with Tyler Holstegge's scoreless ninth, the three Vermont pitchers held Williamsport to just five hits after Lake Monster pitchers had allowed their opponent 10 or more hits in each of the previous 10 nine-inning games played.

Bennie was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Kuhn and Yairo Munoz each had two hits for Vermont. Robinson Torres was 1-for-3 with a two-out two-run double in the second for Williamsport (16-12), while Oliver was charged with seven runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and one strikeout over just 1 1/3 innings for the loss.

After salvaging the final of the three-game series at Williamsport, the Lake Monsters continue their six-game roadtrip with the first of three games at Jamestown on Saturday at 7:05 pm. Vermont returns home to Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Wednesday.
