July 11, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - With just two hits through seven innings, the Spinners offense appeared stagnant, but Lowell rallied for single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning but were unable to cap the night with a win, leaving the bases loaded to end the game with the Staten Island Yankees holding on for a 5-4 win. The loss gave the Yankees a series sweep and was the Spinners seventh loss in eight games.
Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino went 0-for-2 in his rehab appearance, adding a walk, while playing seven innings in right field.
Staten Island (15-13) got on the board first for the third straight night, scoring on a Ty McFarland RBI double in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (12-16) evened the score in the bottom half of the inning after Danny Mars tripled to the right-centerfield gap with one out. A Sam Travis groundout brought in Mars to even the score at one.
The Yankees, who entered the series with seven home runs on the season, took the lead in the fourth, hitting their sixth home run of the three-game series, as Isaias Tejeda went deep as part of a three run fourth inning, pushing the Yankees ahead, 4-1.
The Spinners, who had just two hits entering the seventh, pushed across a run in the seventh after Nick Longhi led off the inning with a double to left field. Cisco Tellez followed with a single up the middle, scoring Longhi to cut the lead in half.
After the Spinners pulled within a run in the eighth, scoring on an RBI single by Travis but the Yankees would answer for a run in the top of the ninth that would prove critical. After Vincente Conde led off the inning with a single, he took second on a throwing error by Mike Meyers in left field and a two-out single by Austin Aune brought him home to give the Yankees an important insurance run.
The Spinners rallied in the ninth, taking advantage of Yankee pitching's inability to throw strikes. Tellez, Deiner Lopez and Mauricio Dubon walked to lead off the inning. After David Sopilka struck out swining, Meyers walked to bring the Spinners within a run. The Yankees went to the pen, bringing in closer Rony Bautista, who struck out Mars and Travis, each swinging, emphatically pumping his chest in celebration to close out the 5-4 win.
Longhi was able to extend his hitting streak to 13 with his double, while Travis had two hits and two RBI in the defeat.
Jake Drehoff (0-2, 5.06) started for the Spinners, finishing with four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out five. Emfember Martinez followed with 2.2 hitless innings, striking out one while working around three walks. Carlos Pinales was charged with one run in two innings, striking out four.
The Spinners look to get back on track Saturday evening on Star Wars Day at LeLacheur Park. Randy Perez (2-2, 2.78) will get the ball for a 5:05 first pitch.
