Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- An offensive explosion was the key for the Aberdeen IronBirds overcoming an early four run deficit as they defeated the Batavia Muckdogs, 9-4. The victory clinched the first series sweep of the season for Aberdeen and it was their fifth straight win.
It was a rough start for Pat Connaughton and the IronBirds, as the Muckdogs scored twice in the top of the first inning to start the game. An RBI double by Carlos Duran and a RBI single by Brady Haynal gave the Muckdogs a 2-0 lead to start the game.
The Muckdogs struck for two more in the bottom of the second, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Wildert Pujols and an RBI single from Javier Lopez that scored Ryan Aper. Lopez's single almost scored Mason Davis, but a strong throw from leftfielder Jamill Moquete cut down the runner at the plate.
The IronBirds struck back in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. A wild pitch scored Alex Murphy, a bases loaded RBI single by Oswill Lartiguez, and a sacrifice fly from Steve Wilkerson cut the Muckdogs' lead to 4-3.
Aberdeen threatened again in the third inning, putting Justin Viele at third and Austin Anderson at first with no outs. Alex Murphy then hit a grounder to the third baseman Aaron Blanton, who caught Viele in a rundown. A pop out by Hector Veloz and a groundout by Federico Castagnini then ended the inning and the IronBirds' scoring opportunity.
Batavia then threatened in the top of the fifth inning, but Jay Gonzalez threw out Javier Lopez trying to score with a strike from deep centerfield.
The IronBirds then threatened in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but Hector Veloz struck out to end the inning.
Aberdeen finally tied it up in the bottom of the sixth as Jay Gonzalez hit a infield single that scored Castagnini.
The IronBirds then blew it open in the bottom of the seventh, plating four runs. Veloz hit a RBI triple to right field, Castagnini hit a RBI single. Moquete hit a sacrifice fly to center, and - - Riley Palmer scored as Steve Wilkerson was caught stealing second base after intentionally getting caught in a run down.
Ivan Hernandez, who entered the game in top of the eighth inning, pitched two perfect innings to seal the Aberdeen victory and clinch the series sweep for the IronBirds.
Matthew Grimes got the win for the IronBirds, the first of his career. Christian MacDonald took the loss for the Muckdogs.
The IronBirds will look for their sixth straight victory of the season tomorrow as they face the Auburn Doubledays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
