-SPIKES RETURN HOME TO MEET SCRAPPERS: The State College Spikes continue their 10th Season tonight as they start a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers with a matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The series is the second of the year between the Spikes and Scrappers, with a four-game, three-day set on the slate to end August and begin September. State College a pair of games from Mahoning Valley at Eastwood Field on June 25-26. The Spikes are 1 1/2 games back of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead, with the Scrappers also part of a crowded playoff hunt.
-LAST GAME: Thomas Spitz doubled in the eventual winning run in the tenth inning for the second time in three nights, and the State College Spikes clinched their third straight series win over the West Virginia Black Bears with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. Spitz, whose two-base hit came with two outs in the tenth on Thursday night in the Spikes' (23-24) 7-6 win over the Black Bears (24-24), doubled with no outs on Saturday to bring in Champ Rowland. Rowland had produced his first State College hit, a leadoff single, to lead off the frame. Jacob Evans went four innings and allowed just one unearned run on four hits in his first professional start for State College. Evans also struck out two batters in the effort. Jery Then earned the win for State College with two innings of relief. Pedro Echemendia struck out two batters in a one-hit tenth for the save.
-RODRIGUEZ ON THE MOUND FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Jorge Rodriguez gets the ball for State College tonight. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native threw a gem in his last start, yielding just one unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out six over seven innings against Batavia on Monday. Rodriguez has put together a 0.32 road ERA this season, and looks for his first home victory tonight. The righty has allowed right-handed hitters just a .181 average this season.
-SCRAPPERS SEND LOVEGROVE TO HILL: Mahoning Valley will put right-hander Kieran Lovegrove on the mound to start tonight's game. Lovegrove is in his second year in the New York-Penn League, but is making his first appearance against the Spikes this evening. The Johannesburg, South Africa native allowed three runs, two of them earne, on two hits, three walks and two hit batsmen over 4 2/3 innings against Williamsport last time out. The righty struck out two in a no-decision. Lovegrove has struck out 24 batters, but walked 18, this season.
-FIVE SPIKES HEADED TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Casey Grayson, Leobaldo Pina, Mike Pritchard, Landon Beck and Juan Perez were all selected to the South roster for the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, as announced by the league on Saturday. The quintet ties a Spikes record for most players headed to the annual showcase of future stars, last set in 2013. The All-Star Game is set to take place on Tuesday, August 18 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen IronBirds.
-DICKERSON MAKES MLB DEBUT: 2011 Spike Alex Dickerson became the 29th player to go from State College to the major leagues on Thursday when he pinch-hit in the eighth inning for the San Diego Padres against the Milwaukee Brewers. Dickerson had been called up by the Padres earlier in the day.
-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes are wearing special Gold Jacket Jerseys tonight in honor of Jerome Bettis and his induction into Canton this weekend...The jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit Children's Miracle Network...Grayson is now third in the league with a .325 batting average, and is third in the league in hits with 51...Pritchard is second in the league in runs scored with 31...Beck, who has 17 strikeouts in his last 11 1/3 innings, is now third in the league in whiffs with 44...Josh Swirchak's four triples are tied for third-most in the NYPL
