Tigers Send Five to NYPL All-Star Game

NORWICH, CT- The Connecticut Tigers the short season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers will be sending five players to the New York-Penn League All-Star game and will represent the North Team. The game will be played August 18th in Aberdeen, MD.

Connecticut will be sending pitchers Tyler Alexander, Drew Smith and Spenser Watkins. They will be also be sending catcher Will Allen and outfielder Victor Padron.

Alexander was drafted this year in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft out of TCU. To this point in the season Alexander has posted an ERA of 0.82 and has allowed just two runs in 22 innings. Alexander has struck out 17 and has walked just four.

Drew Smith, a third round draft pick out of Dallas Baptist has been strong out of the bullpen all year for the Tigers. Smith hasn't allowed a run since July the 4th and is 2-0 this year with an ERA of 0.32 and 31 strikeouts in 26.2 innings.

Watkins in his second year of professional baseball has been one of the best pitchers in the NYPL this season. He is 4-2 with an ERA of 2.70 in nine games all starts. Watkins who was drafted in the 30th round of the draft in 2014 out of Western Oregon is currently eighth in the league in ERA.

Outfielder Victor Padron is in his fourth year of professional baseball and was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2012. Padron from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela leads the league in batting at .342 and will start the game for the North Team.

Will Allen, a catcher, was a 13th round draft pick last year from the University of Mississippi and has been a key bat in the lineup for Connecticut all year. He is currently hitting .263 with one home run and 17 RBI's. Allen is hitting .292 with seven RBI's during his last seven contests.
