Auburn Doubledays News Release
NORWICH, CT - The Doubledays fell to the Tigers on the road 4-2 with all four runs and have of the nine Connecticut hits happening in a long bottom of the third.
The Doubledays did have a threat in the first. Darryl Florentino singled into right and Max Schrock hit a single to second to put runners on first and second with nobody out in the first. But unfortunately for Auburn, Rhett Wiseman popped out, Kelvin Gutierrez flew out, and Melvin Rodriguez grounded out to end the first.
The second inning went by quickly as the Tigers' starter Ryan Castellanos started a run and the Doubledays' Grant Borne retired the side in order.
In the top of the third, Auburn's 9-1-2 hitters all groundout out before Connecticut's bats exploded in the home half of the third. Shane Zeile the seven hitter started things off with a double into right. Keaton Jones dug in next and flew out to deep right allowing Zeile to advance to third. But when Zeile ran to third, Wiseman tried to throw him out and his throw missed wide allowing Zeile to score and give the Tigers a 1-0 victory. After Jacob Kapstein flew out to right as well, there were two outs and nobody on. Then the one through four hitters all hit consecutive singles to give Connecticut a 4-0 lead it never gave up.
The Doubledays didn't record another hit until Randy Encarnacion's double in the fifth. The double ended a streak of 13 in a row retired by Castellanos from the first until the fifth. Encarnacion moved over to third with one out on a single to right by Jake Jefferies, but was stranded when Jorge Tillero grounded into a double play.
Later in the seventh, the Doubledays had only gotten one runner to third in the entire game when it put together a rally. Rodriguez led off with a single to center and moved to third on Encarnacion's second double to left. Rodriguez then scored on Jefferies' second single of the night while Encarnacion scored on Tillero's fielder's choice. With a runner on first and one out in the seventh, the Doubledays trailed 4-2.
The bottom of the seventh and eighth went by quickly before Auburn stepped up to the plate down 4-2 in the ninth. But Jake Shull came in for the Tigers and retired the Doubledays' 5-6-7 hitters to end the game and record his fifth save of his professional career.
