Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - Taylor Guilbeau dominated on the hill as the Doubledays' starting pitcher and the offense backed him up in Auburn's first win over Williamsport 8-7.
The lefty Guilbeau breezed through the first inning striking out one and forcing two groundouts before the Doubledays took the lead in the bottom of the first. After Victor Robles flew out and Max Schrock grounded out, the 'Days offense broke out. Ian Sagdal and Kelvin Gutierrez both reached on infield singles. Rhett Wiseman knocked them both in on a double before Diomedes Eusebio drove in Wiseman with a double of his own. Eusebio then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error to give the Doubledays an early 4-0 lead.
The second, third, and fourth innings flew by before both teams scratched across a run in the fifth. In the top of the inning, Jan Hernandez singled with one outand moved over to second on a ground out to Dalton Dulin at second by Gregori Rivero. Hernandez then came around to score on a single to center by Dylan Bosheers. After four and a half, Auburn led 4-1.
Robles led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple to center. The outfielder than walked in from third when Max Schrock doubled to center as well to give the Doubledays a 5-1 lead.
Guilbeau was taken out of the game after five innings with an impressive line of: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 2 K's. The lefty was the definition of a ground ball pitcher as 12 of the 15 outs he recorded came on ground balls while only one out came by fly out.
With Guilbeau out of the game, the Crosscutters took advantage in the sixth against Luis Torres. The righty got a quick ground out before walking Andrew Amaro. Carlos Duran then flew out to right for the second out before Jesus Posso drew a walk. With runners on first and second and two outs, Venn Biter stepped in and tripled into dead center to put the score at 5-3. After Biter tripled, Jan Hernandez launched his team-high seventh homer to the game up at 5-5.
An inning later in the seventh, the Doubledays took back the lead. Robles singled and stole second before advancing to third on a single by Schrock. Both scored when Melvin Rodriguez doubled into left. Rodriguez moved over to third when Kelvin Gutierrez grounded out before scoring on asingle to center by Rhett Wiseman. After seventh, the Doubledays led 8-5.
The eighth went by quickly before Mariano Rivera III came out of the bullpen trying to shut the door in the ninth. Rivera gave up a lead off double to Gregori Rivero before Bosheers lined out to left. But the righty then gave up three straight singles and was in a jam with the bases loaded and just one with the Doubledays up 8-6. He forced Carlos Duran to fly out to right for the second out that allowed William Cuicas to score from third and Zach Coppola to advance to third with the Doubledays up 8-7. Jesus Posso dug in with runners on the corners and two outs, but grounded into a fielder's choice to end the ball game.
