Lowell Spinners News Release

TROY, NY - With about one-third of the season left to play in the New York Penn League, the Stedler Division is very much up for grabs between Tri-City, Connecticut and the Spinners. Going into tonight's contest, the Lowell Spinners were two games behind the division-leading ValleyCats but could not get any closer, falling 6-3 in the first game of a vital three-game series.

Lowell (25-24) got on the board early before most fans were in their seats, scoring a run in the top of the first inning as Luis Alexander Basabe walked, was advanced to second on a bunt by Jeremy Rivera, third on a single by Andrew Benintendi and then scored when Victor Acosta grounded out to short.

Three straight hits in the second with one out plated the Spinners' second run as Kyri Washington doubled, Austin Rei singled and Aneudis Peralta followed with a single. The team threatened for more, however, Basabe lined into a double play to end the inning.

Tri-City (28-21) cut the deficit to one run in the fourth on a solo homerun by designated hitter Hector Roa and after a single, the ValleyCats took the lead on a two-run homerun by Dexture McCall.

The ValleyCats extended the lead in the sixth on back-to-back, two-out doubles off of reliever Enfember Martinez.

Rei cut the deficit to one in the seventh, smacking his second homerun of the season high over the left-field wall. But, Tri-City pulled away in the eighth with two more runs, one on an RBI double and the other courtesy of an Edwar Garcia balk.

Lowell starter Austin Glorious (0-1, 5.79), a Red Sox undrafted free agent that joined the team earlier this week, made his second appearance of the season and his first start. Glorious was cruising, striking out four of the first six batters he faced, and then he was victimized by the longball in the fourth inning. He gave way to Martinez, who for the second time this week, pitched very well in middle relief, striking out four over three innings while allowing just one run. Garcia, who was named to the 2015 NYPL North All-Star roster yesterday, was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, but could not do it again in the eighth, allowing two runs.

The bottom third of the Lowell batting order carried them tonight, as Washington, Rei and Peralta had six of the team's eight hits. Peralta, taking advantage of an opportunity to be in the lineup, had a three-hit night and knocked in a run,

Jose Almonte (2-2, 4.12) will look to get a game back tomorrow night as he gets the start for the Spinners. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
