
Big Fourth Inning Leads Connecticut over Auburn

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (24-23) opened a brief home stand with the Auburn Doubledays (23-25) with a 4-2 win. Ryan Castellanos was stellar on the mound and the Tigers scored four runs in the third inning.
Catcher Shane Zeile (3-4, 3B, 2B) led the inning off with a double against Auburn starter Grant Borne (1-2) and scored on an error. Following the double shortstop Keaton Jones lifted a fly ball to right field and on the play Zeile tagged and moved to third. He would be able to score when the throw went by the third basemen.
With two outs and the bases empty in the same inning leftfielder Victor Padron (2-3, R) singled and advanced to third on a single by designated hitter Cam Gibson. Second basemen Pat Mackenzie extended the lead with an RBI single and after first basemen Will Allen singled in two runs it was 4-0 Tigers. Allen now has seven RBI's in his last three games played.
Auburn did score two runs in the seventh inning but could not get any closer as Jack Fischer was able to come on and put out the flames stranding a runner on base.
With the score 4-2 going to the ninth Jake Shull (SV 5) fired a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. Ryan Castellanos (1-0) allowed hits to the first two batters he faced but ended up working five scoreless innings giving up just four hits. He didn't strike out anybody or issue a walk.
Borne lasted four and two thirds inning on the afternoon as he gave up seven hits and four runs all earned. He struck out one and walked one. Relievers Sam Johns and Cody Gunter combined to throw three and a third shutout innings and gave up just two hits.
Connecticut will play the second game of the three game series at home against Auburn on Monday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
