
Renegades Rally But Fall to Aberdeen in Series Opener

Wappingers Falls, NY (8/9/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades were defeated by the Aberdeen IronBirds on Sunday evening by a score of 3-2 at Dutchess Stadium.
Aberdeen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as after shortstop Ricardo Andujar and left fielder D.J. Stewart each singled, designated hitter Chris Shaw drove in Andujar on a RBI double. The Ironbirds extended their lead to 2-0 as on the first pitch of the second inning, third baseman Austin Pfeiffer hit a solo home run over the left field wall.
Aberdeen scored another run in the top of the third inning on a RBI single from first baseman, and former Marist College Red Fox and Renegades intern, Steve Laurino to take a 3-0 lead which turned out to be the game-winning run.
Renegades starting pitcher Michael Velasquez (1-4) went five innings, allowing three runs and two earned runs in the loss while striking out five batters
The Renegades cut the Aberdeen lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run double from first baseman Hector Montes. Montes is hitting .600 (9-15) over his last four games played and has driven in three runs during that span.
Hudson Valley had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when second baseman Jake Cronenworth led off the frame with a single and stole second base. But Aberdeen's reliever Christian Turnipseed closed the inning and pitched a scoreless ninth inning as well to pick up his first save of the season
Travis Seabrooke (3-5) picked up the win for Aberdeen as he tossed five innings in the start and scattered just one hit and struck out two batters.
With the result, the Renegades fell to 22-26 while the IronBirds improved their record to 23-25.
Notes: Brandon Koch pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Hudson Valley and has been hard to hit over the past few weeks. Since July 19th, Koch has allowed just one earned run in his last six outings and has struck out 16 batters in 10 and two-thirds innings.
The Renegades continue their three-game series against Aberdeen on Monday, August 10th with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
