-SPIKES LOOK TO MAKE PLAYOFF PUSH AGAINST VERMONT: The State College Spikes look for their eighth straight home win as they face the Vermont Lake Monsters to continue a three-game series tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. With last night's shutout win, the Spikes have the best team ERA in all of Minor League Baseball at 2.50. State College is 4-0 so far this homestand after sweeping the Tri-City ValleyCats. The Spikes are 14-2 in their last 16 home games and are currently tied for the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead with Lowell and Tri-City. State College is 10-10 all-time against Vermont, with a 7-3 record in home games
-LAST NIGHT: Steven Ramos lined a single to left-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning to plate the only run of the game as the Spikes pulled into a tie for the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead with a 1-0 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. With State College's win and losses by Lowell and Tri-City, the Spikes are now knotted with the Spinners for the top spot in the NYPL Wild Card race. Jamestown's loss on Friday also drew the Spikes within three games of the Pinckney Division leader. Arturo Reyes, Victor DeLeon and Mitch Harris combined on a four-hit shutout, with Harris picking up the victory. Luis Perez was the only Spike with multiple hits.
-PAULINO TO MAKE START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Willy Paulino heads to the hill for his tenth appearance and fifth start as he gets the ball for State College tonight against the Lake Monsters. Paulino tossed the first complete game for the Spikes since Nicolas Suero in 2007 two outings ago with his rain-shortened five-inning win over Connecticut last Monday. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native yielded two runs on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out six. Paulino has 18 strikeouts in his first four starts.
-LAKE MONSTERS TAP SOSA FOR TONIGHT'S GAME: Right-hander Lee Sosa gets the ball for Vermont this evening. Sosa was selected by the Athletics in the 26th roudn of the 2012 draft out of Binghamton University, where he was First-Team All-America East his senior season as a reliever. Last time out, Sosa went 4 1/3 innings, his longest outing of the season, and allowed two runs on four hits in a no-decision against Lowell. The Bronx, NY native pitched for the Arizona League Athletics last year, making 18 relief appearances.
-HERRERA MAKES HISTORY FOR SPIKES: Juan Herrera became the first player to play for and against the Spikes in the same season on Wednesday, and rapped his first hit for the Spikes last night. Herrera, who was acquired by the Cardinals from the Indians in a trade on Tuesday, had played eight games against the Spikes this year for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Herrera was joined by another new addition, infielder Brett Wiley, and the two formed Thursday night's double-play combination for the Spikes.
-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes' current five-game win streak is their longest of the season...The Spikes have thrown 17 straight scoreless innings as a team...Steven Ramos is now second in the NYPL in batting with a .350 average...David Washington is tied for the NYPL lead with 33 RBI...Washington was intentionally walked last night for the league-leading fifth time..Kevin Herget's five wins are tied for the most in the NYPL
