Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA --- State College beat the Lake Monsters for the second straight day with a two-out, game-ending RBI single to give the Spikes a 2-1, 10-inning New York-Penn League victory over Vermont on Saturday night @ Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Steven Ramos, who had the winning RBI single in the Spikes 1-0 win over Vermont on Friday, led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double off Lake Monsters reliever Matt Stalcup. After a bunt popout for the first out of the inning, Ramos stole third base to move just 90 from home plate.ÃâÃÂ
Stalcup was able to get Dante Rosenberg to groundout to short for the second out, but after an intentional walk, Trevor Bayless replaced Stalcup and gave up the game-ending RBI single to Cesar Valera. It was the third straight loss for Vermont, all by one run and coming in the final inning at bat for the opponent (Hudson Valley broke 1-1 in eighth inning of win over Lake Monsters Thursday).
Lee Sosa, making his first start as a professional (27th game) or a collegian (35 games for Binghamton), allowed just one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over six innings. The only run came in the second on a Brett Wiley one-out triple and Ramos sacrifice fly. Stalcup (1-4) gave up two hits over three scoreless innings before being charged with the 10th inning run to take the loss.
State College, which has now won six straight games overall and its last eight games at home, lowered its team ERA to a Minor League-leading 2.46 as three pitchers combined to allow one run on five hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Vermont scored its only run of the game in the fourth as Tyler Marincov walked with one out, advanced to second on a hit batter and scored on a Michael Soto RBI single to center.
Jimmy Bosco 4-for-4 for the Spikes and Soto had two of the five hits for Vermont (23-24), which has lost four of the first five games on the roadtrip to fall under the .500 mark for the first time since 18-19 on July 25th. Despite the losing streak, Lake Monsters pitchers have not allowed more than three earned runs over the last 10 games to lower their team ERA to a season-low 2.87 overall.
ÃâàThe Lake Monsters will look to get back to .500 on Sunday when they wrap up the six-game roadtrip at State College beginning at 6:05 pm. After an off day Monday, Vermont will open a six-game homestand against Jamestown and Williamsport on Tuesday at Centennial Field.
