Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - With Iron Man and Spiderman on hand for the first ever Super Heroes Night, the Lowell Spinners scored four in the fifth inning which was more than enough for the Spinners pitching staff en route to a 4-1 win Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell (26-19) threatened first in the third inning after a leadoff double by Aaron King. A one-out single by Williams Jerez advanced King to third, but Jerez was out at second on the play and Deiner Lopez struck out to end the threat.

The Spinners broke through in the fifth inning and it was again King leading off the rally. After King and Moore walked to start the inning, Jerez sacrificed them into scoring position and Tzu-Wei Lin delivered a two-run single to left to give Lowell a 2-0 lead. Lopez followed with a single to move Lin to third and moved himself into scoring position with a stolen base. A Jose Colorado sacrifice fly brought home Lin and Lopez scored on a Danny Bethea single to right, giving the Spinners a 4-0 lead.

Batavia (22-22) got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Chad Wallach led off the frame with a double to right field, coming around on a sacrifice fly by Coco Johnson to cut the lead to three.

The Muckdogs would get no closer however as Jonathan Aro and Joe Gunkel combined to shut down the Batavia offense the rest of the way for a 4-1 final in just two hours and 17 minutes.

After going hitless in their first two at-bats, the Spinners finished the night with seven hits, led by a two-hit game from Bethea, who also added an RBI. Lin added two RBI, his 14th and 15th of the season.

Corey Littrell started and went the first three, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Aro (4-2, 2.39) followed with 4.1 innings of relief allowing the one Batavia run on two hits and a walk. Gunkel picked up his third save of the season and remains unscored upon in 10.1 innings to start his professional career after 1.2 hitless to close out the win.

The Spinners conclude the six-game homestand Sunday evening with a 5:05 first pitch on Military Heroes Card Set Giveaway, presented by Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank and The Lowell Sun. Ty Buttrey (3-1, 2.23) is on the mound for the Spinners.
