Four-run seventh pushes IronBirds to win
The IronBirds topped the ValleyCats 8-4 in a back and forth battle. Tri-City scored a run in the second, third and fifth innings to build a 3-1 lead in the early goings of the game. But Aberdeen put up crooked-numbers in the sixth and seventh innings, pushing across three in the sixth and four in the seventh. Jimmy Yacabonis picked up the win coming out of the bullpen and pitching 2.1 scoreless innings.
Bierfeldt, Mancini power IronBirds offense
Conor Bierfeldt had a monster game, with all three of his hits going for extra-bases. He hit a three-run homer, his seventh round-tripper of the season, and two doubles in a four-RBI game. Trey Mancini had his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-4 on the night with 3 RBI. He drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh, breaking a 4-4 tie with a 3-run triple. His average is up to .327 on the season.
Solid on defense despite miscues
The IronBirds committed three errors in the field, costing the team one unearned run. Despite the errors, Aberdeen made a few exceptional plays in the field to save a couple runs. Mike Yastrzemski picked up his seventh outfield assist of the season. making an excellent throw to cut down Jon Kemmer at the plate. Steve Clevenger threw out two would-be base stealers and the team turned its 41st double play of the season.
On the mound tonight...
RHP Mitch Horacek gets the start tonight for Aberdeen looking to help the IronBirds clinch the series. He will be looking to bounce back his last start in which he gave up four earned runs in five innings. He is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA. LHP Chris Cotton will start for Tri-City looking to help the ValleyCats stop an eight-game skid. Cotton has made four starts and six appearances, pitching to a 3-2 record with a 0.79 ERA. He has given up just four runs and walked one batter on the season, though he has only pitched 22.2 innings. IronBirds hitters will be in for a battle as Cotton has held hitters to a .075 batting average against on the road.
