Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
Norwich, CT "" The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (20-25) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (19-27) by a score 6-3 Saturday night at Dodd Stadium. The game will be remembered for a quick five minute rain delay in which the tarp was put on the field and the performance out of the bullpen by Scrappers RHP Ben Heller (2). Heller picked up his second save of the season as he pitched three scoreless inning and allowed only two hits while striking out four batters.
Following a marathon 13 inning game on Friday night in which the Tigers used seven pitchers the Tigers needed starting pitcher Alex Phillips (2-1) to pitch a lengthy outing to give the bullpen some rest. Phillips pitched over half the game, but suffered his first loss of the season as he pitched 5.1 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits.
The Tigers offense continued to struggle with runners on base as they went 0-7 as a team with runners in scoring position and left four on base. SS Curt Powell (2-4) showed his strength as he was one of the highlights of the Tigers offense as he hit a two run home run in the sixth inning that cut the deficit to 4-3. LF Kasey Coffman (2-4) added a pair of singles.
The Scrappers got the hits in the right moments. DH Juan Romero (2-4) started the scoring in the second inning as he hit a two run home run over the left center field wall that put the Scrappers ahead 2-0. C Sicnarf Loopstok (2-4) came into the game having only four hits in 39 at bats. Loopstok added two hits in tonight's game including an RBI double in the eighth inning that gave the Scrappers a commanding 6-3 lead.
