Spikes Take Wild Card Lead with 2-1 Walk-Off Win over Lake Monsters

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes took their third straight Saturday night walk-off win, along with sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race, as Cesar Valera singled in the tenth inning to give the Spikes a 2-1 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

State College (26-19) stretched its win streak to six games, and earned its eighth straight home victory. Although Lowell won on Saturday, Tri-City's loss gave the Spinners the Stedler Division lead and put the Spikes a game ahead of the pack in the Wild Card race. Jamestown's defeat also drew State College within two games of the NYPL Pinckney Division lead, three nights after the Spikes trailed by five games in the division.

Steven Ramos got the Spikes' last rally going with a leadoff double off of the bag at third base, and Ramos's steal of third put him in prime position to score. After Jimmy Bosco was intentionally walked, Valera sent a pitch from newly entered Vermont (23-24) pitcher Trevor Bayless to right-center field to score Ramos and give the Spikes their second straight walk-off win and fourth overall this season.

Bosco went 4-for-4 on the game with a double, collecting his second four-hit game of the season and providing exactly half of the eight State College hits on the night.

Ramos knocked in the Spikes' first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning one batter after Brett Wiley tripled to right field.

The Spikes also helped raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer on Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Health, 95.3 FM 3WZ and the Centre Daily Times. The Spikes' pink jerseys were the first across baseball to bear the names of those who have fought breast cancer.

Each uniform was then put up for bids along with other autographed items in a Jersey-off-the-Back Auction, which netted over $6,000 for The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center to help the battle against the disease.

Spikes starter Willy Paulino struck out eight batters over a season-long six innings, the most for any State College pitcher in a single outing this season. Paulino yielded Vermont's only run on three hits, three walks and a hit batsman. Jeff Rauh (2-2) earned the victory in relief with a perfect tenth inning

The Lake Monsters tied the game in the fourth inning on Michael Soto's RBI single. Soto was the only Vermont player with multiple hits in the game.

Reliever Matt Stalcup (1-4) took the loss after being tagged with the winning run on a total of three hits and an intentional walk over 3 2/3 innings.

The contest was the first to go extra innings at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this year, but took just 2 hours, 25 minutes to play.

Sunday, the Spikes complete their three-game series against the Lake Monsters, as well as a six-game homestand with a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Nick Petree (1-1) gets the ball for State College as the Spikes strive to go 6-0 for the homestand. Vermont is scheduled to send right-hander Bobby Wahl (0-0) to the hill.
