IronBirds Score Six in Two Innings, Defeat 'Cats 6-2

August 3, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

ABERDEEN, MD- Right now, nothing is going right for the 'Cats. Their offense has been lackluster, pitching hasn't been as effective as it was earlier in the year, and tonight the defense committed 3 errors which led to four unearned runs, as they were defeated 6-2 by the IronBirds. The 'Cats have now lost nine straight games, but still remain just one game behind the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division.

The 'Cats once again scored early on in the ballgame, getting one run in the first on a James Ramsay triple. He would score following a fielding error by IronBirds second baseman Federico Castagnini on the relay throw, making it 1-0 'Cats.

ValleyCats starting pitcher Chris Cotton was effective through the first three innings before making a mistake in the fourth by giving up a 3-run home run to Jeff Kemp. The inning began with a throwing error by 'Cats shortstop Jack Mayfield, followed by a single off the bat of Trey Mancini. Cotton would proceed to strike out the last two batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 4th, the IronBirds would score three more times, all unearned runs. Cotton got the first out in the inning, but after Mike Yastrzemski reached on another throwing error by shortstop Jack Mayfield, and Steve Clevenger singled to center, his night was finished.

Pat Christensen came into the game for the 'Cats and got Trey Mancini to hit a ground ball to second baseman Tony Kemp, who proceeded to nail Yastrzemski at home plate for the second out of the inning. The IronBirds Kemp, Jeff Kemp then hit a 2-run double to left field scoring Clevenger and Mancini. The very next batter was Austin Wynns, who hit a single to center scoring Kemp, making the score 6-1 IronBirds.

That's all the runs the IronBirds would need, as the 'Cats would score just one more time in the top of the 8th inning, after a triple from D'Andre Toney and a sac fly from Tony Kemp made the score 6-2. They would then go 1-2-3 in the 9th to lose their ninth straight ballgame. Miraculously, thanks to the hot start to the season, the 'Cats are only one game behind the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division, and are still very much in Wild Card contention.

Coming into the ballgame, the 'Cats were the best defensive team in the league, but committed a total of three errors on the night, which contributed heavily to the loss.

The ValleyCats look to salvage the final game of the three game set, and get back on the winning track on Sunday evening against the IronBirds. The 'Cats will send RHP Zach Morton (1-1, 1.65 ERA) to the mound to oppose IronBirds LHP Jorge Rivera (2-1 3.04 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m.
