-SPIKES FACE RENEGADES IN MATCHUP OF DIVISION LEADERS: The State College Spikes get a glimpse of a potentional playoff opponent tonight as they welcome the Hudson Valley Renegades to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the second game of a three-game series. The Spikes lead the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division by nine games, while Hudson Valley leads the NYPL McNamara Division by eight games and holds a two-game lead on State College for the best record in the league. The three games comprise the back half of a six-game homestand for the Spikes, as well as the only meetings between State College and Hudson Valley in the regular season. The Renegades swept a three-game series from the Spikes last year at Dutchess Stadium. All-time, State College is 9-15 against Hudson Valley and 4-8 in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST NIGHT: Jake Stone delivered a two-run ground-rule double in the first inning for the State College Spikes, but the Hudson Valley Renegades scored three times in the eighth to take a 5-2 win in the first matchup of the New York-Penn League division leaders.
Stone's double in the opening frame gave him 27 runs batted in over 33 games played this season, and staked the Spikes to the game's first lead. However, the Renegades fought back with doubles from Alec Sole and Grant Kay to score a run in the third, and Wilmer Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth to tie the game.
Hudson Valley then produced four hits, two of them infield singles, and used a double steal to take the lead for good in the eighth. Coty Blanchard stole home for his league-leading 18th theft of the year as part of the double steal, part of a 5-for-6 night on the basepaths for Renegades runners. Hudson Valley is now 84-for-114 in stolen bases this year, the most steals for any team in the NYPL.
Renegades starter Enderson Franco earned the win with seven innings of two-run ball. Franco yielded four hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts.
-NIELSEN GETS BALL FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Trey Nielsen makes the start for the Spikes evening, his fourth of the season and his 11th overall appearance. Nielsen, the Cardinals' 30th-round draft choice in 2013 out of the University of Utah, pitched four scoreless innings against Mahoning Valley in his last outing on Monday. The righty allowed just one hit and one walk as he faced the minimum 12 batters and struck out three. Nielsen is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts, all of which have gone exactly four innings. The Salt Lake City, UT native has also held opposing hitters to a .160 batting average.
-RENEGADES GO WITH GANNON FOR GAME TWO: Right-hander Nolan Gannon makes his eighth start of the year for Hudson Valley tonight in the middle game of this three-game set. Gannon allowed three runs on six hits and a hit batsman over five innings to get the win against Vermont on Monday in his last appearance. The San Diego, CA native also struck out four on the night last time out. Gannon was selected in the fourth round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Rays, and spent last year with Rookie-level Princeton in the Appalachian League, where he went 1-5 with a 7.43 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts). The righty is holding left-handed hitters to a .203 average this year, and is allowing leadoff hitters just a .194 average.
-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes have scored the second-most runs in the NYPL with 271 runs in 49 games, an average of 5.45 runs per game...Tri-City now leads the league with 271 runs scored...Alex De Leon is leading the NYPL in individual runs scored with 34, one more than Hudson Valley's Hunter Lockwood...De Leon's seven homers are tied for fourth in the league, and his 22 extra-base hits are just one behind former teammate Rowan Wick for the league lead...Kyle Grana's 14 strikeouts per nine innings are third-most among NYPL relievers, and his 42 strikeouts are fifth-most in the loop...Robelys Reyes has struck out once every 14.45 plate appearances, the least-frequent rate in the NYPL...Hudson Valley's Lockwood has homered once every 15.91 plate appearances, the second-best rate among active players in the NYPL behind Kevin Krause of Jamestown
