Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Yairo Munoz went 2-for-5 with two runs and a double to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, while starter Jerad Grundy allowed just one run on four hits over five innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters won their season-high third straight game with a 6-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.

Munoz got the Lake Monsters on the board in the third inning by leading off with a double, stealing third base and scoring on a throwing error by catcher Francisco Mejia. Munoz also had a bunt single in the fifth inning and is hitting .339 (19-for-56) during his 15-game hitting streak, tied for the fifth longest in Vermont history with Scott Hodges in 1998. It is also the longest current hitting streak in the New York-Penn League and third longest of the season.

Mahoning Valley quickly tied the game in the top of the fourth on a leadoff home run from Leo Castillo, his fifth of the season and the only run allowed by Grundy in the game. Vermont got the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on a Jose Brizulea RBI double to plate Munoz, while J.P. Sportman also scored on the play on a throwing error by rightfielder Juan De La Cruz for a 3-1 lead. The Scrappers got a run back in the sixth on a Steven Patterson sacrifice fly, but the Lake Monsters scored three times on four straight hits to start the bottom of the inning.

Max Kuhn and Trent Gilbert led off the inning with back-to-back singles before advancing to second and third on passed ball. With the infield in, Gabriel Santana dunked an RBI single into short left field to score Kuhn and Seong-min Kim followed with a two-run double to centerfield for the 6-2 lead. It was Kim's ninth hit of the season, five of which have been two-run hits including four two-run doubles.

Jose Torres, making his first relief appearance since June 21st, allowed just three hits with two strikeouts over the final three innings to earn his second save of the season. Scrapper starter Jose Zapata allowed one run on three hits over four innings, while Justin Garcia (2-1) was charged with five runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings of relief for the loss. Sportman and Kuhn both had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Castillo had a pair of hits for Mahoning Valley (21-29).

Vermont (20-30) has now won four of the first five games on the current six-game homestand, including three straight wins for the first time this season after five two-game winning streaks. The Lake Monsters are also 3-0 in the month of August for the first time since the 1996 Vermont Expos won their first five August games.

The Lake Monsters will wrap up the six-game homestand on Monday night at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 pm against the Scrappers. It is Princess Night at the ballpark brought to you by Morway's Moving & Storage. After an off day on Tuesday, Vermont will hit the road for a six-game roadtrip to Aberdeen and Auburn.
