State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Trey Nielsen started and struck out six batters over 4 1/3 innings on the mound for the State College Spikes, but the Spikes yielded two unearned runs that spelled the difference in the Hudson Valley Renegades' 2-0 win on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Spikes (32-18) also wore special Pink Ribbon Jerseys for the annual Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Health. The jerseys went up for bids in a Jersey-off-the-Back Auction that raised $6,320 for Mount Nittany Health's Breast Care Center through The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Nielsen (3-2) allowed three hits and two walks during his time on the mound, but left with runners on first and second and one out in the fifth. Hudson Valley (35-15) then plated the game's first run when Hunter Lockwood advanced to third base on a fielder's choice, then home on a passed ball.
Reliever Tyler Bray allowed the other unearned run in the eighth when Casey Gillaspie crossed the plate after a two-out bunt single by Jace Conrad combined with an error.
Despite the loss in front of 4,807 fans on Sunday, the Spikes (32-18) are still out in front of Williamsport by eight games in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division, and just three games back of the Renegades for the league's best record.
Darren Seferina, Danny Diekroeger and Luis Cruz all produced multiple hits for State College. The Spikes threatened to score the game's first run in the third inning, but Cruz was thrown out at the plate trying to go home on Seferina's base hit to right field.
Bray yielded three hits and two walks while striking out two over 3 1/3 innings for his longest outing as a professional.
Conrad led Hudson Valley with three hits. The Renegades were just 1-for-2 in stolen base attempts after stealing five bags on Saturday.
Nolan Gannon (5-1) earned the win for Hudson Valley by giving up six hits and a walk over five innings in a starting role. Gannon struck out three in the effort. Kyle McKenzie (3) picked up the six-out save, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout.
The Spikes and Renegades finish their three-game series with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send left-hander Ian McKinney (1-1) to the mound for his third start as a Spike, and his first at home. Hudson Valley will go with left-hander Oscar Armenta (3-1).
It's also the finale of the Spikes' six-game homestand on Buck Night at the ballpark, presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ. $1 Outfield Bleacher seats, $1 hot dogs, $1 small sodas and $1 peanuts will all be available for fans. Plus, it's Princess Night at the park as well as Daddy-Daughter Date Night featuring a post-game dance.
