'Cats Build Early Lead; Hold off Muckdogs 7-5
August 3, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY -Terrell Joyce hit a three-run home run in the first inning and added an RBI double in the fifth inning as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Batavia Muckdogs, 7-5, in front of 4,063 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Sunday evening.
Nick Tanielu got the scoring started for the ValleyCats in the first frame when he drove home Alex Hernandez with an RBI single to left field.
Two batters later, Joyce hit a 1-1 slider over the left field wall for his second three-run home run in three games, and his team-leading sixth long ball of the season.
In the bottom of the second, ValleyCats catcher Alfredo Gonzalez hit a one-out single, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI by Hernandez to stretch Tri-City's lead to 5-0.
Despite the 'Cats early lead, the Muckdogs were able to put the outcome in doubt, twice trimming Tri-City's lead to one run. In the top of the sixth inning, Batavia cut the lead to 6-5 and loaded the bases with only one out. However, Tri-City reliever Randall Fant caught a ground ball off the bat of Batavia right fielder Victor Castro and threw home to Gonzalez for the force out. Gonzalez then threw to first to retire Castro, converting an inning-ending double play and preserving the lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Gonzalez drove home Jose Solano with a two-out RBI single, extending the ValleyCats lead to 7-5.
Tri-City closer Ryan Thompson pitched a 1-2-3 inning to shut the door on the Muckdogs in the ninth, picking up his sixth save of the year in the process. Fellow reliever Vince Wheeland struck out two batters in a scoreless inning en route to earning his first career win. Derick Velazquez also contributed a solid relief outing by holding Batavia scoreless in the eighth.
The ValleyCats will conclude their series against the Muckdogs, as well as this six-game home, with an 11:00 a.m. morning game on Camp/Senior Day. Getting the start for Tri-City will be RHP Austin Chrismon (4-2, 3.27), with LHP Ben Holmes (0-1, 4.34) on the bump for Batavia.
