-LEAGUE-LEADING SPIKES FINISH SAWBUCK SERIES: The State College Spikes, still alone atop the New York-Penn League with a 42-24 record, face the Williamsport Crosscutters tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the finale of a three-game series to conclude the 2013 SawBuck Series. The Spikes still lead both the Pinckney Division and the race for the league's best overall record by one game over Jamestown. In addition, for the first time since 2006, the Spikes have clinched outright victory in the season-long SawBuck Series as they lead, 8-3, with a 5-1 record away from home. State College is 46-49 all-time against Williamsport, with a 25-22 home record.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes battled the Williamsport Crosscutters into extra innings, and a three-run surge by the Spikes in the eleventh was enough to give them a 5-3 win on Tuesday night at Historic Bowman Field. Carson Kelly knocked in the go-ahead run for the Spikes with a single to left field in the eleventh for his first hit of the game, and an error on the same play allowed another run to score. Luke Voit broke through with an RBI single as well to push the State College lead to 5-2. Jacob Booden, in his third inning of relief work, then got the first out of the bottom half of the eleventh before yielding a walk and two base hits that cut the advantage to two runs. Jeff Rauh would take over for the Spikes and record the final two outs for the save.
-O'SHEA MAKES RETURN TO MOUND FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Ben O'Shea goes to the mound for State College tonight. O'Shea came back to the Spikes on Friday from Single-A Peoria after pitching well for State College in the first month of the season. The southpaw has two quality starts on the year for the Spikes, including a seven-inning start against Mahoning Valley on July 8 in which he allowed three runs and earned the win. O'Shea, originally from Reading, MA, went 1-4 with a 5.70 ERA in six starts with Peoria.
-RIOS GETS BALL FOR CROSSCUTTERS: Right-hander Yacksel Rios gets the start tonight for Willliamsport. Rios has face the Spikes twice already this year, both times in a relief role. The Caguas, PR native went three innings for the win on July 2 in State College, and tossed a scoreless 1 2/3 innings on July 18 against the Spikes. Rios was shifted to the rotation in mid-July, and is 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA in eight starts. Last time out, the righty gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in a no-decision against Jamestown on Friday.
-WASHINGTON NAMED NYPL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes first baseman David Washington has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week of August 19-25. The 6'5" first baseman is currently hitting .277 to go with his team record ten home runs and league-leading 47 RBI, and leads the NYPL in intentional walks with eight. Washington's 34 walks overall also lead the league.
-SPIKE MARKS: Steven Ramos leads the NYPL in batting by 16 points over Jamestown's Adam Frazier (.355 to .339)...The Spikes lead the league in both batting average (.275) and ERA (2.55)...Ramos is the NYPL's hit leader with 75 on the season...The GCL Nationals have surpassed the Spikes for the best team ERA in MiLB
