Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
BROOKLYN, NY- On Wednesday night in Brooklyn, the ValleyCats were only able to manage one hit off of Cyclones starter John Gant, who pitched a complete game one-hit shutout, defeating the 'Cats 1-0. ValleyCats starter Kyle Westwood received the loss, but only gave up four hits in his six innings of work.
Westwood threw the ball well enough to earn a win, but a play in the field is what deemed costly for the 'Cats. After retiring 11 straight batters, Westwood gave up a single to Anthony Chavez to lead off the bottom of the 6th inning for the Cyclones. Then on a pick-off attempt, Westwood threw the ball wide of first baseman Conrad Gregor, allowing Chavez to advance to second base.
Eris Peguero then attempted a sacrifice bunt that went back towards Westwood, who couldn't make the tough play, which was charged as a hit. That put runners on the corners with nobody out. Gavin Cecchini followed with a groundout to second base, which scored Chavez and put the Cyclones on top 1-0.
That was all that Brooklyn would need, as ValleyCats batters couldn't figure out Gant, who threw a masterful game for the Cyclones. The lone hit for the 'Cats came in the top half of the sixth inning, when Chan Moon lined the ball to right field with two outs. He was then thrown out attempting to steal second, which ended the frame.
In the ninth inning, Gant issued a lead-off walk to Ronnie Mitchell, but the 'Cats couldn't take advantage. Adam Nelubowich attempted a sacrifice bunt twice, but fouled the ball off both times. He then flew out to short center for the first out of the inning. Michael Martinez then pinch-hit for Moon and grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the ballgame.
The loss dropped the ValleyCats to 41-27 on the season, and after the Lowell Spinners defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds, the 'Cats lead in the Stedler Division is now only three games with eight to play.
The 'Cats return to "The Joe" on Thursday for a doubleheader against the Vermont Lake Monsters. Game one begins at 5pm and game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game 1. Both will be seven inning games.
RHP Kevin Comer (2-4 4.69) gets the ball for the ValleyCats in game one, and he will be opposed by Lake Monsters LHP Brent Powers (4-3 2.64). In game two, the 'Cats send LHP Evan Grills (6-0 2.60) to the mound against RHP Cristhian Perez (0-1 8.44).
