Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Bierfeldt Homers Again, But 'Birds Fall
Conor Bierfeldt launched another home run to left field at LeLacheur Park, and at the time it gave the IronBirds a 2-0 lead. The Lowell Spinners would score eight unanswered runs, however, and take an 8-2 victory, setting up a rubber match this evening. Steve Brault got the start for the IronBirds. He went 5.1 innings, allowing two hits, three runs (one earned), walking one and fanning four. It was his longest outing since he went 5.2 innings back on June 26th at home against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Williams Louico and Michael Joseph each pitched in relief in the loss.
Not all bad news...
The IronBirds finished playing around 9:30 p.m. in Lowell and, with the loss, had to do some scoreboard watching. It took until almost 12 midnight, and 16 innings, but the Tri-City ValleyCats beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-3. With both Aberdeen and Brooklyn losing, the IronBirds held onto first place for another day. The IronBirds have been alone in first place since August 6th after they defeated the Auburn Doubledays 10-9 in extra innings.
Here Comes Hudson Valley One More Time
Following tonight's series finale in Lowell against the Spinners, the IronBirds return home for a brief two game home stand against the Hudson Valley Renegades. It will be the final two times the teams play each other this season, 14 times in all. Last night, Hudson Valley defeated Connecticut, meaning the Renegades are lurking just 2.5 games back of the IronBirds entering play today.
Schedule Down the Stretch
The IronBirds, after tonight, will play five of their final seven games at Ripken Stadium. They host the Renegades for two tomorrow and Friday. Then, they will visit MCU Park in Brooklyn for the final time in a series that could determine the winner of the McNamara Division. The IronBirds then finish out the season with three games at home against the Lowell Spinners. If Aberdeen makes the playoffs, the post-season would begin on Friday, September 6th.
On the mound tonight...
LHP Mitch Horacek will get the start for the IronBirds tonight. He is 5-3 with a 2.30 ERA. In his last outing, on Thursday in Hudson Valley, he went 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs. He took the loss as the IronBirds fell 4-2. He will be making his 11th appearance of the season and his tenth start. Lowell will start LHP Daniel McGrath.
