Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Staten Island Yankees took advantage of two Ryon Healy fielding errors in the bottom of the eighth inning to score an unearned run and complete a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory on Wednesday night at Richmond Country Ballpark.

With the game tied 2-2 in the eighth, the Yankees used a hit batter, a one-out error by Healy and a forceout to put runners on first and third with two outs. Yeicok Calderon then hit a potential inning-ending grounder to Healy, who bobbled the ball as he started to make a toss to pitcher Joe Michaud allowing Calderon to reach safely and Derek Toadvine to score the go ahead run.

The Lake Monsters put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth as Chad Pinder was hit by a one-out pitch and Tyler Marincov followed with a single to center, but Josh Miller hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.  The Lake Monsters have not lost a game this season in which they led by three runs or more, but Wednesday was the fifth time that Vermont has  lost a game after leading by two runs (all 2-0 leads).

Vermont had taken a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run double from Healy to score Melvin Mercedes and B.J. Boyd, but the Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, two-run double from Calderon. The double came off Michaud (0-1), a 33rd-round pick in 2013 draft out of Bryant  who was making his Vermont debut after being promoted from Arizona, allowed three runs (two earned) on 2 hits with five strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings for the loss.

Starter Lou Trivino allowed two hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five scoreless innings for Vermont (29-39), while 2013 first-round pick Billy McKinney went 1-for-4 with a first inning single in his Vermont debut after hitting .320 in 41 games for the Arizona League Athletics.

It was the eighth straight loss for Vermont (29-39), which is now 8-13 in one-run games and 23 of  the Lake Monsters 39 losses have been by either one or two runs. Vermont has also lost six straight and eight of its last nine games played at Staten Island dating back to the 2011 season.

The Lake Monsters head to Tri-City for three games, including a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 pm on Thursday that can be heard on 960 am "The Zone" and then a single game on Friday at 7:00 pm. Vermont then returns to historic Centennial Field for a five-game homestand to close out the 2013 season August 31-September 4.
