Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners scored three in the first inning and never looked back from there, cruising to their second consecutive win over the Aberdeen IronBirds, 7-3, Wednesday night at LeLacheur Park.

The win, coupled with a Tri-City ValleyCats loss, pulled the Spinners within three games of the Stedler Division lead with seven to play, including two between the two teams.

Lowell (37-29) got on the board in the first inning. Forrestt Allday led off the inning with a single up the middle and a one-out double by Manuel Margot put both in scoring position. Kevin Mager followed with a drive to centerfield that centerfielder George Barber badly misplayed. After an awkward hop took the ball over Barber's shoulder as Mager raced the bases, Barber missed both cutoff men allowing Mager to circle the bases and give the Spinners a 3-0 lead. The play was originally scored an inside the park home run but was corrected to a triple and throwing error by Barber following the game.

Aberdeen (34-31) got a run in the top half of the second inning after back-to-back one-out doubles by Austin Wynns and Ronarsy Ledesma cut the lead to 3-1.

The Spinners got the run back in the top half of the third inning. Jake Romanski doubled down the left-field line and came around to score on a one-out single by Danny Bethea. Lowell had a chance for a bigger inning, but Mager was thrown out at home on a single to center by Carlos Asuaje and Aaron King popped out to end the frame.

Lowell added some insurance in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. After Mager worked a walk and stole second, Bethea singled to extend the lead to 5-1. After a single by Asuaje, a wild pitch moved both men into scoring position and RBI singles by King and Moore gave the Spinners a 7-1 lead.

The IronBirds would not go quietly, plating two in the sixth on an RBI triple by Mike Yastrzemski and groundout by Trey Mancini to cut the lead to 7-3.

They would get no closer however as Taylor Grover and Joe Gunkel combined for three scoreless innings of relief to give the Spinners the win in both the game and the series.

Every member of the Spinners line-up with the exception of Deiner Lopez had a hit in the well balanced 11 hit attack. Bethea, Asuaje and King each had two hit games, while Romanski extended his hitting streak to all five games since coming off the disabled list. Bethea and Mager each collected two RBI while Asuaje extended his on-base streak at LeLacheur Park to a league best 20 games.

Daniel McGrath (3-2, 4.78) got the win with six strong innings, keeping the IronBirds off balance with his off-speed offerings. He allowed three runs on four hits and a walk, striking out seven. Grover followed with two innings, allowing one hit while striking out one. Gunkel closed out the win with a scoreless inning, striking out two.

The Spinners welcome the Connecticut Tigers to the ballpark for a one-and-one series, with a Zombie Night game at LeLacheur Park before the two teams head to Norwich on Friday. Teddy Stankiewicz is on the bump for the Spinners Thursday with a 7:05 first pitch.
