Stars Weekly (Week 9) - Stars Beat Toronto to Earn 10th Win of the Season

Week 8 Recap:

The Texas Stars took three out of a possible six points in Week 8, going 1-1-0-1 for the second straight week. The Stars lost to the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-1 on Tuesday night at Copps Coliseum, falling to 1-6-1-1 all-time in regular season meetings. Hamilton scored three times in the second period to take a 4-0 lead, then Colton Sceviour scored the lone Texas goal early in the third, his 13th of the season, assisted by Travis Morin and goaltender Allen York.

The Stars returned home on Friday to host the San Antonio Rampage and jumped out to the fastest lead of the season as captain Maxime Fortunus scored just 68 seconds into the game. Colton Sceviour scored early in the second period to give Texas a 2-0, tallying his AHL-leading 14th goal of the year. The Rampage got one back late in the frame and then scored twice in the first 7:36 of the third period to rally for a 3-2 lead. Stars rookie Brendan Ranford forced overtime as he tied the game with 4:28 remaining in regulation, scoring his four goal of the season. Sceviour scored in the third round of the shootout to give Texas a 1-0 lead, but Drew Shore kept San Antonio alive by finding the net with the last shot of the fifth round and Jed Ortmeyer scored the decisive shootout goal in the seventh round to give the Rampage a 4-3 victory.

Saturday's game against the Toronto Marlies did not feature such late drama. Rookie Brett Ritchie scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal at 14:51 of the first period to give Texas a 1-0. Nearly 1,100 stuffed animals were thrown on the ice and collected for Operation Blue Santa. Toronto's Spencer Abbott tied the game a mere 31 seconds into the second period, but that's when the Stars took over. Texas scored three goals in the span of 2:33 of the middle frame to take a commanding lead. Rookie Curtis McKenzie blasted home a power play goal at 7:08, Ritchie setup Chris Mueller for a backdoor goal 27 seconds later and Travis Morin tipped in a Cameron Gaunce shot at 9:41 for a 4-1 lead. Carter Ashton gave the Marlies a glimmer of hope with a goal late in the period, but Mike Hedden put the game to bed in the third period when he took a gorgeous pass from Justin Dowling and calming weaved around goalie Drew MacIntyre before slotting home a backhander for a 5-2 victory.

Week 9 Preview:

Texas completes a three-game home stand to start Week 9, hosting the Oklahoma City Barons on Wednesday, November 27th at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center for Winning Wednesday presented by H-E-B. If the Stars beat the Barons, each fan in attendance will receive a voucher for a free ticket to the next Winning Wednesday game, which is December 18th vs. San Antonio.

While most Stars fans will be feasting on Thursday, Texas will be traveling to Michigan. The Stars will face the defending Calder Cup champion Grand Rapid Griffins for a two-game series at Van Andel Arena on Friday, November 29th and Saturday, November 30th. Both games will start at 6:00 p.m. CT. The Stars and Griffins split their four games during the 2012-13 season, with each team winning once at home and once on the road. Texas and Grand Rapids have played 20 all-time games head-to-head and each has 10 wins.

Following the two games at Grand Rapids, the Stars will complete their road trip, and begin their Week 10 schedule, on Tuesday, December 3rd against the Oklahoma City Barons at 7:00 p.m. at Cox Convention Center. The Stars will host a watch party for the game at the Lakeline Pluckers, which is located at 11066 Pecan Park Boulevard in Austin. The fun starts at 6:00 p.m. with drink and food specials, Texas Stars trivia and, of course, the Stars' AHL Live broadcast on the Pluckers' televisions.

Center Travis Morin (11-17-28) leads the AHL in points, is second in the league in assists, is tied for fourth in goals, tied for fifth in plus-minus (+11) and is on a five-game assist streak with eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) and a +1 rating during that span. Right wing Colton Sceviour (14-8-22) leads the league in goals and shots (91), is tied for fourth in points and is currently on a three-game point streak with three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and a +1 rating during that span. Defenseman Maxime Fortunus is currently on a three-game point streak and has five points (1 goal, 4 assists) and a +2 rating in his last six games. Right wing Scott Glennie (2-4-6) is on a two-game assist streak and has a +4 rating in his first eight games of the season.

Team Notes: The Oklahoma City Barons enter this week's action having alternated win-loss for the last nine games and are currently one-game under .500. The Barons were blown out 6-1 last Tuesday at San Antonio, then flew to Cleveland and routed the Lake Erie Monsters 6-1 on Friday. Lake Erie exacted revenge on Saturday with a 5-3 win at Quicken Loans Arena. This week Oklahoma City will face Texas on Wednesday and then travel to San Antonio for a weekend home-and-home series with the Rampage. Over the last 11 games, the Barons have used five different starting goaltenders: Richard Bachman & Ilya Bryzgalov are now up in Edmonton, Olivier Roy has since been traded to Calgary, while Tyler Bunz and Laurent Brossoit are currently on the roster. Jason LaBarbera cleared NHL waivers last week and was assigned by the Oilers to OKC, thus he could be the sixth different starter in the last 12 games if he gets the nod on Wednesday at Cedar Park Center. Edmonton also loaned enforcer Steve MacIntyre to Oklahoma City last Friday; he has been on Injured Reserve all season after suffering an injury at Cox Convention Center during an NHL pre-season game between the Oilers and the Dallas Stars. Team Notes: The Grand Rapids Griffins, the defending Calder Cup champions, started the 2013-14 season 2-2-1-1. They have since gone 11-2-0-0 in their last 13 games, including a seven-game winning streak, and they are currently on another three-game win streak. Grand Rapids has used their strong surge to climb to second place in the Western Conference and third overall in the AHL with 28 points heading into Week 9. The Griffins have received strong goaltending from both Petr Mrazek and Tom McCollum, but Mrazek has been particularly noteworthy. The second year net minder has won his last six starts, posting a 1.34 goals-against average, a 0.953 save percentage and one shutout during that span. He has also recorded his first career NHL shutout with Detroit, blanking the Edmonton 5-0 and making just 14 saves on November 2nd. Right wing Patrick Eaves, a veteran of 417 NHL games, cleared waivers and was loaned to Grand Rapids on November 15th. Eaves has since played in three games for the Griffins, his first AHL games since the 2005-06 season when he played for the Binghamton Senators during his first pro season. Grand Rapids ranks second in the AHL in goals per game (3.74) and is tied for second in goals-against (2.42). Stars Player of the Week: (Week 8)

Travis Morin - C - #23 3 GP, 4 points (1 G, 3 A), E, 4 PIMs

Center Travis Morin continued his break-neck scoring pace in Week 8. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native had points in all three of Texas' games to extend his current assist and point streak to five games. Morin began the week with an assist on the Stars' only goal in a 5-1 loss at Hamilton last Tuesday. He added another assist on Friday night in a 4-3 shootout loss to the San Antonio Rampage and then had two points (1 goal, 1 assist), helping to lead Texas to a 5-2 win over the Toronto Marlies. Morin currently leads the AHL in points (28), is second in the league in assists (17), is tied for fourth in goals (11) and tied for 15 in plus-minus (+11). He has registered at least one point in 15 of his 16 games played during 2013-14.

Stars Quick Hits:

- THE BANE OF ORTMEYER - In Texas' last two home shootout losses, both have come at the hands of San Antonio and left wing Jed Ortmeyer. The Rampage beat the Stars 5-4 in a shootout on March 8, 2013 when Ortmeyer scored the winning-shootout goal in the 12th round. Ortmeyer did it again on Friday, scoring in the seventh round to beat Texas 4-3.

- THE DUKE OF YORK - Stars goaltender Allen York recorded his third win of the season Saturday night against Toronto, picking up his 20th career AHL victory. The Wetaskiwin, Alberta native is now 3-0-1 in five appearances for Texas, posting a 2.20 goals-against average, a 0.924 save percentage and one shutout.

- THE 300 CLUB - Center Travis Morin played in his 300th career AHL game on Saturday against the Toronto Marlies. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native has recorded 236 points (78 goals, 158 assists) in his AHL career. He has played in five AHL games with the Hershey Bears and 295 games with Texas, meaning Morin is five games away from his 300th career game for the Stars.

- A NEW STAR - Defenseman Ryan Button made his Texas Stars debut on Saturday night against Toronto. The Edmonton, Alberta native made Texas' opening night roster, but was subsequently reassigned to the Idaho Steelheads, the team's ECHL affiliate, without playing a game. Button has played in 61 career AHL games, but Saturday was the first time he hit the ice in the league without wearing a Providence Bruins uniform.

- THE FORTY SHOT MARK - The Texas Stars out-shot the Toronto Marlies 43-26 in Saturday's 5-2 victory. It marked the ninth time in 20 games this season that Texas has recorded 40 or more shots on goal in a game. The Stars lead the AHL in total shots (749) and shots per game (37.45) and have been held under 30 shots in just three of the team's 20 games this year.

- WINLESS IN OVERTIME - Texas is now 0-2-2 in overtime games this season, losing twice in OT and also picking up two shootout losses. Just like last season, the Stars have continued a trend of going well past the normal five rounds, playing a 10-round shootout at Toronto on November 17th and a seven round affair last Saturday. Texas currently has the second highest average rounds per shootout (8.50) in the AHL this season, trailing only Toronto (10.00) who has only participated in one shootout.

- WINNING WITH INSURANCE - The Stars won their 10th game of the season on Saturday against Toronto. The 5-2 win was the seventh time in those 10 wins that Texas has been victorious by a margin of three or more goals this year. The Stars average margin of victory currently stands at 3.5, while the team's average margin of defeat (including overtime and shootout losses) is -1.9.

- APPROACHING STARS MILESTONES - RW Colton Sceviour needs 1 point to reach his 200th career pro point and 2 points for his 200th career AHL point. C Justin Dowling is 2 GP away from his 150th career pro game. C Chris Mueller is 1 goal shy of his 100th career AHL goal. C Travis Morin needs 3 GP to reach his 300th career game with Texas.
