Saturday, November 23: Albany Devils 5 - Adirondack Phantoms 3

A large gathering of 4,618 jammed into the Glens Falls Civic Center on Youth Jersey Night and saw some wild back-and-forth action especially at the end of the second period. Tim Sestito had one goal and two assists for the Devils and Joe Whitney had a goal and a helper.

Adirondack received goals fro Brandon Manning, Matt Mangene and Bruno Gervais.

Upcoming Opponents

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (12-4-2, 26 points) - Affiliation, Pittsburgh Penguins

Wednesday, November 27 (7:00) - Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is second in the Eastern Conference with 26 points trailing first place Manchester by three. The Baby Pens split a weekend series with the St. John's Ice Caps last weekend in Wilkes-Barre. Brian Gibbons was called up to Pittsburgh but still leads the Penguins overall at 7-15-22 and the Boston College product is third in the AHL in points.

This is Game 2 out of 4 in the season series. Adirondack lost a 6-3 decision at the Penguins on October 18.

Former Adirondack Phantom Harry Zolnierczyk returns to Glens Falls for the first time since being traded late last season. "Harry Z" leads the Penguins with eight goals. The Flyers organization traded him late last year to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Jay Rosehill and Zolnierczyk spent the rest of the season with their affiliate in Norfolk. Last summer he was dealt by the Ducks to the Penguins for defenseman Alex Grant.

Journeyman goalie Jeff Deslauriers is second in the league in wins at 10-3-2, 2.34, .900.

Veteran Tom Kostopoulos is the team's captain and is now their active scoring leader at 7-9-16. Kostopolous has over 1,000 games of professional experience. The 34-year-old is returning to his original stomping grounds for the twilight of his career where he starred from 1999-2003. He is the all-time leader in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history in games played (349), goals (107), assists (161) and points (268).

The Penguins are third in the league in offense at 3.67 goals per game trailing Binghamton and Grand Rapids. Wilkes-Barre allows just 24.8 shots per game, fewest in the AHL.

Albany Devils (11-7-1, 23 points) - Affiliation, New Jersey Devils

Friday, November 29 (7:00) - Times Union Center, Albany, NY

Adirondack and Albany hook up for the 5th out of 12 in the Northway Rivalry series with the season set knotted at 2-2 so far. The all-time series is ties at 19-19 going back to the beginning of the 2010-11 season when the Devils moved to Albany from Lowell.

Union College product Keith Kinkaid leads the way and was AHL Player of the Week last week. He has two shutouts in his last four games and is 7-2-1 overall, 1.97 (3rd in the AHL), .921. Third-year pro Joe Whitney from Boston College is their top scorer again with 8-12-20 after tallying another goal and assist against the Phantoms last Saturday. Whitney led the Devils last year with 26 goals. The 5'6"speedster scored 6-6-12 in 11 games last year against Adirondack and is 2-2-4 in four games of the season series so far this year.

Northway Rivalry Series History: Tied 19-19

2013-14 - Albany Devils and Adirondack Phantoms Tied 2-2

2012-13 - Albany Devils win series 8-4

2011-12 - Adirondack Phantoms win series 7-3

2010-11 - Series tied 6-6 (Phantoms win season series based on total points)

Syracuse Crunch (9-6-2, 20 points) - Affiliation, Tampa Bay Lightning

Saturday, November 30 (7:00) - Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY

Saturday night is the first of six meetings this season for the Phantoms against the defending Eastern Conference Champions who fell to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the Calder Cup Finals.

Sensational Russian Rookie Nikita Kucherov has been lighting it up with 13-11-24 which is currently second in the AHL in points and also second in goals. But Kucherov was recently called up to parent-club Tampa Bay and scored his first career NHL goal on Monday night. Another young Russian talent is close behind for the team scoring lead; Vladislav Mamestnikov has 8-13-21.

Former Adirondack Phantom and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Joey Mormina serves as an alternate captain. Former Albany River Rat Mike Angelidis (2006-10) is back with the Crunch as their captain.

The Crunch have been a particularly streaky team this year. Syracuse was 9-3-1 a couple weeks ago but have gone winless in their last four with a mark of 0-3-1 including back-to-back losses to Hamilton last weekend 4-1 and 3-0.

25 Terrific Seasons

Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
