Community Update: Fans Provide Cans in Record Numbers

November 26, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The official numbers are in and our fans came through big-time and in record numbers this year. Approximately 1,500 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable food items were donated by over 300 fans in our annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive. This will help feed 40 needy families in the North Country with about 40 pounds of food each.

The 300+ fans who helped our cause by donating this huge amount of food all received free tickets for the Phantoms game on Wednesday night as our thanks to them for their generosity this holiday season.

"What a great job our fans did in support of the Salvation Army and donating food for our community," Phantoms Executive Vice President Chris Porreca said.

And our friends who received this gigantic donation were thrilled. "The food drive was huge this year," said Major David Dean of the Salvation Army of Glens Falls. "I would say it was two-to-three times more food than we have ever had donated from the Phantoms. Awesome!"

Thanks you so much, fans. You gave and gave in this season of giving. We are truly humbled by your generosity and your support of our efforts to serve the community.

Movember

The race is getting tighter in our Movember donations contest with the players. The guys are growing mustaches to help support mens' cancer issues, treatment and awareness. Donations are being received at the Phantoms home games in the names of each player to benefit the Live Strong Foundation and the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital.

Rob Bordson has taken the lead for most donations! Cal Heeter, despite his ultra-goofy face in his latest mustache pic, has been bumped from the top spot. But it's a tight race and mere pennies separate the two in what is currently a virtual tie. Kyle Flanagan is hanging in there in the #3 position. It's going down to the wire! Be sure to donate during our last two Movember games on Wednesday and Saturday! Don't forget as well that our "Movember Finale" is this Saturday. Last chance to see the guys in their sporty 'staches before they go all clean-shaven again (well, most of them anyway).

Scoville Diamond Dig!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Scoville Jewelers Diamond Dig at the Phantoms game on Friday night. 500 fans received valuable gift-cards to Scoville Jewelers ranging in value up to $100.

And five lucky fans dug their way through the snow in our on-ice pickup for even more valuable goodies. The grand-prize winner of the $1,000 value diamond was Linda Williams! And Babette Donlon was the winner of the 14K yellow gold and amethynst necklace. Thanks to Scoville Jewelers for their continued support of Phantoms hockey with great promotions such as this one!

Jersey-Mania a Big Hit

Even in the cold weather, the fans were lined up outside well before the doors opened. We started giving our Youth Jerseys to the kids beginning at 6:00 and then by 6:35 they were all gone. our allotment of 1,000 jerseys for the kids had been fully distributed. Obviously they were a big hit. And the early-arriving crowd generated a terrific buzz in the building and terrific pregame atmosphere for our game that night.

Then, after the game, the fans gobbled up the game-worn specialty jerseys in our live auction. The players presented the jerseys to our lucky winners and posed for pictures and autographs. The one-game-only uniforms featured our "25th Season" logo commemorating our terrific history involving 25 years of the AHL in Glens Falls. The Adirondack Phantoms are in their fifth season bringing great American Hockey League action to the North Country. The Adirondack Red Wings played at the Glens Falls Civic Center for 20 years from 1979 through 1999 winning four Calder Cups along the way.

25 Terrific Seasons

Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
