Iowa Chops News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Stars, in coordination with the Des Moines Fire and Police Departments, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, raised nearly $20,000 for MDA research and awareness at a recent Stars' Hockey game.
On Saturday, January 12th, the Des Moines Area Firemen and the Des Moines Police kicked off the event by playing in the 3rd annual "Guns n' Hoses" game at Wells Fargo Arena. The Des Moines fire and police departments raised more than $2,500 in raffle sales and ticket sales for the "Guns n' Hoses" game. Fans who bought tickets to the "Guns n' Hoses" game were then invited to stay for the night-cap as the Iowa Stars took on the Quad City Flames.
Throughout the night, Stars fans were able to bid on specialty jerseys worn by the Stars that night. Several of the one-time only jerseys were sold via silent auction; the remainders were sold during a live auction immediately following the game. The two auctions combined generated $14,720 for the MDA. Three of the 25 jerseys auctioned off drew more than $1,000, with the top jersey going for $1,700, a jersey worn by Vojtech Polak. All fans purchasing a jersey had the chance to meet the player, get their picture taken with that player, as well as have the player sign their jersey.
In addition to what the Stars were able to raise for MDA, the Stars also played host to a Teddy Bear Toss. Fans were asked to bring stuffed animals to the game, and then after the Stars scored their first goal fans flooded the ice with more than 500 teddy bear sand other plush toys. The stuffed animals were then given to Des Moines Area Fire Stations and Police Stations to give to children in their time of need.
