Peoria Gets Bullish On Moose in 4-2 Win

January 17, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

The Peoria Rivermen reversed recent history against the Manitoba Moose by winning in Winnipeg for the first time since October 21, 2005 in a 4-2 decision on Thursday night.

With the victory the Rivermen extended its overall win streak to eight games and has now won the last nine in a row on the road.

Hannu Toivonen's third period performance alone was worth the price of admission to the game, capping a hard-fought team effort from the Rivermen who got big saves when needed en route to the club's 23rd win of the year.

Peoria weathered the opening first-period storm presented by Manitoba, allowing only one shot on net in the early going while finally swinging the momentum pendulum back towards the Moose end. For the next two or three shifts the Rivermen hemmed the Moose in its own end, keeping pressure deep in the zone while cycling the puck relentlessly and looking for scoring chances.

Nikolay Lemtyugov finally cashed in on that pressure for Peoria when he threw the puck in front of the Manitoba goal and it deflected past Drew MacIntyre off the skate of a Moose defender to make it 1-0. His third goal in two games, the unassisted marker came at the 5:00 mark of the contest.

The Moose would antler its way back into the hockey game with a pair of second period goals from Maxime Fortunus and Jason Jaffrey, grabbing a 2-1 lead. But the advantage would be only temporary as Peoria steamed right back on to the scoring trail just 2:03 later.

Julian Talbot scored a power play goal by picking up the rebound on a shot from the point at the side of the Moose net to tie the contest. Micki DuPont and Steve Wagner combined to set up the goal at 10:22.

Then Jeff Woywitka, who is quickly becoming a game-winning goal specialist, rifled home a slapshot from the point over the left shoulder of MacIntyre at 18:00 after Trent Whitfield's forecheck forced a turnover along the right-wing wall.

Toivonen stole the show in the third period, keeping Peoria ahead to stay and getting a late empty-net goal from Yan Stastny at 19:54 to cement the win.

Peoria is now 23-11-4-3 on the season and 14-3-2-1 on the road. The same two teams will rematch tomorrow night at 7:35 pm.

You can catch every single Rivermen game over the air on your Home for Rivermen Hockey, 96.5 ESPN RADIO with Tom Callahan and the pre-game show kicks off one half-hour before faceoff. Friday night's broadcast will begin at 7:05 pm.
