Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Right-hander Taylor Stanton gave Clinton yet another quality outing as the LumberKings beat the Lake County Captains for the first time ever with a 4-1 win at Alliant Energy Field. Stanton (W, 6-2) yielded a run on five hits over 6.0 innings and struck out a season-high seven.

Stanton's outing was supported by just four hits, but all were crucial. Vinnie Catricala lifted a solo home run to the left-field berm with two gone in the first - his fifth blast of the year - for a 1-0 lead. Tim Morris broke open a 1-1 game with an opposite-field solo home run in the fifth, sneaking a ball just inside the left-field foul pole for his second clout of the season.

Lake County scored its one and only run in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1 as Casey Frawley doubled and scored on a single to center by Jason Smit.

Following Stanton's exit, right-hander Chris Kirkland continued the dominance. Kirkland (S, 2) fired 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only a hit while striking out five. He fanned the final two batters he faced in the ninth, including pinch-hitter Adam Abraham.

The Kings added insurance with two runs in the seventh as Welington Dotel plated Catricala with a one-out sacrifice fly to right and Hawkins Gebbers singled home Mario Martinez with a line single to left.

Captains' starter Vidal Nuno gave up just one hit - Catricala's homer - over 4.0 innings while striking out seven. Right-hander Austin Adams (L, 2-3) served up the Morris blast and three total runs over the final 4.0 innings.

The win was just the third in the last eight games for the LumberKings, who at last check remained 1.5 games behind Quad Cities for second-place in the West.

The LumberKings (33-26) conclude the series against the Captains (39-20) with game three action tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney (3-4, 2.76) makes his team-leading 13th start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
