Great Lakes Loons News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - It took Josh Wall 12 starts but finally Wednesday night the Loons right-hander recorded his first win of the season. Great Lakes defeated Burlington 6-5 at Community Field and extended its winning streak to four games, tying a season high.
The win was Wall's first Midwest League victory since August 14, 2007. Wall has had several impressive starts this season resulting in no-decisions, including two starts in which he went seven innings without allowing an earned run. But it took a six-inning, four-run performance to up his record to 1-4.
The Loons also narrowly avoided squandering a 5-0 lead. Already up 1-0 on a heads-up base running maneuver by Angelo Songco in which he scored on a passed ball by catcher Wil Myers, the Loons pushed across four runs in the third.
Christian Lara began the scoring with a two-run home run off starter Keaton Hayenga (1-3). A second passed ball by Myers again scored Songco, who notched two doubles in the game. Later in the inning with one out, Jaime Ortiz hit into a ground ball double play. But because Joey Lewis recorded the first out of the double play at first base and Jerry Sands crossed the plate ahead of the tag on Brian Ruggiano between first and second, the run counted.
The Bees countered the Loons' four-run third with three runs of their own in the bottom half to pull to within one. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles by Gerard Hall and Lewis and a two-run double by Myers.
J.T. Wise led off the fourth with a solo home run, his second consecutive game with a home run and his fourth of the year to extend the Loons' lead to two. Burlington added a run in the seventh off reliever Steve Smith, but would get no closer. Luis Vasquez threw a hitless, scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the year.
The Loons improve to 37-22, 15 games over .500, their best record in relation to .500 this season.
The Loons and Bees conclude their three-game series Thursday night beginning at 7:30pm. Right-hander Brett Wallach (4-0, 3.64) returns from the Ogden roster to make his first start since May 24. Right-hander Nick Wooley is scheduled to start for the Bees (2-4, 7.36). The game will be carried on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
