Chiefs Walk Off Lansing 2-1 in Ten Innings

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs took game two of the series over the Lansing Lugnuts by the score of 2-1 in ten innings Wednesday evening at O'Brien Field. The win moves the Chiefs to 32-27 on the season as they go for the sweep Thursday against the Lugnuts.
Game two of the Chiefs series with the Lugnuts was the opposite of game one where eleven runs were scored, all in the first four innings. Both the Chiefs Rob Whitenack and Lugnuts Dave Sever were able to work in and out of trouble to not allow any runs and combine to give up six total hits through five innings.
In the sixth inning Chiefs reliever Frank Batista gave up two hits in his first inning of work to set up Brad Glenn for an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to score Lansing first baseman Sean Ochinko.
The Chiefs tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Facing a 3-2 count Nelson Perez smashed a solo homerun to right field off of Lugnuts pitcher Aaron Loup. The homerun was the first of the season for Perez. Charles Thomas followed the homerun with a walk but the Chiefs were unable to score again to take the lead.
Leverton was able to get out of a bit of a jam in the ninth inning to give the Chiefs the opportunity to win the game in the bottom half of the final frame. Leverton struck out the first batter of the ninth for his third of the game. Oliver Dominguez was able to single for Lansing, Dominguez then stole second. Turkamani went down on strikes, to make four K's for Leverton. Things got interesting when the next batter drew a walk and all of a sudden there were runners on first and second with two outs. The next batter grounded out to short to end the inning.
Steven Grife continued the strikeout expo Chiefs pitchers were putting on by striking out the side to give the Chiefs the opportunity to win it in the bottom of the tenth.
The inning started off with a Lee walk and Lugnuts pitcher Brian Slover committed an error throwing to first as Lee moved to third on the error. Logan Watkins went down swinging for the first out of the inning and Matt Cerda was intentionally walked to make five on the night. DJ Fitzgerald came to the plate next and grounded to short. Lugnuts short stop Ryan Goins went to second for out number two, but Fitzgerald beat out the throw to first to break up the double play as Lee crossed home plate to make the final score 2-1 in ten innings.
Grife (3-1) pitched one inning, had three strikeouts, and did not allow a run or a hit, and gave up no walks. Whitenack who started the game for the Chiefs threw five innings, giving up no runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three. Batista threw two innings with one strikeout, giving up three hits, issued one walk, and one earned run. Leverton finished the game after pitching two innings giving up no runs on one hit, he gave up one walk and struck out four.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Nelson Perez (LF) - Perez went 1-3 with a run scored, one RBI, a homerun and one walk. The homerun tied the game 1-1 in the seventh inning.
Notes...Lee had his 18th multi-hit game of the season...Cerda takes the team lead in walks on the season, with five walks Wednesday night for a single game high on the year...Whitenack committed his sixth wild pitch of the season tying him for the most on the team with Su-Min Jung and Ronny Morla...The Chiefs drew nine walks, one off their season high...The Chiefs had lost four straight extra inning games before tonight...Perez hit his first homerun of the season Wednesday night...Thursday, June 10 is Throwback Thursday We Love the 80s! with a 7:00 p.m. start and a salute to everything 80s.
