Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 9, 2010) - On a night when Burlington Bees manager Jim Gabella was buoyed by the knowledge that his son Cody had been drafted earlier in the day, his team fought back from a five-run deficit only to fall by a single tally to the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night at Community Field.
It started when Great Lakes plated their first run against Bees starter Keaton Hayenga in the first inning after Angelo Songco hit the first of his two doubles, reached third on a Brian Cavazos-Galvez single, and came home on a passed ball.
A slugfest broke out in the third inning as the two teams exchanged four-run frames. Christian Lara launched a two-run shot for the Loons, who added runs on a second passed ball as well as a double play. The Bees matched them in the bottom half of the frame with RBI hits from Joey Lewis and Gerard Hall, as well as the inning's big blow, a two-run double off the bat of Wil Myers.
Great Lakes added a run in the top of the fourth on J.T. Wise's second home run in as many days to extend the lead to 6-4. It took the Bees a few chances to crawl any closer, but they finally broke through again in the top of the seventh with Myers at the plate again. With one out and Hall at second after a walk and a wild pitch, the backstop sent a single up the middle to bring the Bees back to within one.
Luis Vasquez entered the game in the ninth and struck out Lewis with the tying run on first to pick up his eleventh save in as many chances.
The younger Gabella, a shortstop at Notre Dame High School, was drafted in the 50th round of the June free agent draft by the Atlanta Braves.
The Bees and Loons close out the series tomorrow night at Community Field on Thirsty Thursday presented by the Mark Warth Agency. Be one of the first 1,000 fans through the gates to pick up a 2010 Bees team photo courtesy of Photovisions and Burlington Trailways.
